For the first time , with 10,000 miles on it, my Phazer seemed to have starting issues. It would click a few times before finally turning over and it seemed to turn over like it was -15f instead of 30f that it is. I needed to do the oil change so I pulled the starter out (cut out the extra casting) and it was out of alignment SLIGHTLY so I took it apart, cleaned everything, and put it back together with locktite as the bolts WERE loose. The brushes were pretty nasty but cleaned up nicely and the magnets were good. Seems to have fixed my problem but I can't believe such a small alignment issue caused the problem, the green stripe was only just off the mark, about 1mm. How far out of alignment gave you guys issues?

By 2009, that particular problem was taken care of by Yamaha. Also check your starter solenoid/relay as your issue was exactly the same as mine. If it happens again, try jumping the two posts on the solenoid. Get only a Yamaha part as aftermarket ones can stick and burn up your starter (ask me how I know).

I agree 1mm out just does not seem to be enough to cause a issue. Probably doesnt help anything though.
