Looks like I'm going to have to change the starter on my 2014 SR Viper. Can the starter come out without engine removal? The starter draws over 125 amps and there isn't any engagement, can't hear the starter do anything. TIA

Common issue, unfortunately. I hear you can change it through the same access panel as oil change?

I replaced my starter a few weeks ago. It's not extremely easy but can be done through the bottom panel opening. You need to remove the oil filter and then remove 2 bolts that hold the starter on as well as the starter cable. You don't need to drain the oil pan as some others have suggested.

Yes, through the bottom cover. Tight quarters, but I did get it out. I was concerned, I don't have a shop manual for the Viper, but I do have 1 for my NYTRO XTX, and that shows that the engine has to bee removed 1st. Disassembled the starter and found the magnets broken. I have been having starting problems all year, I'm glad it happened while doing a "skid" rebuild for next year and not somewhere out in the mountains.

What are the symptoms of the starter going bad other than the normal things like grinding, won't engage etc.

With mine, it turned the engine over slower than it should even with a fully charged new battery. The last time it started the engine before it quit working completely, it turned the engine over faster than I had ever heard it crank. Then on the next startup, it wouldn't do anything. Just a click from the relay and it was a dead short circuit. When I took the starter off, the magnets were not broken but the glue that holds them in place had let go and the magnets were all grouped on one side of the starter housing.
The replacement starter that I bought from eBay is an aftermarket and is much cheaper and also cranks the engine over faster than I've ever heard it crank in the past.

I just noticed that you're from Canada. Royal Distributing has a competitive price on these aftermarket starters as well.

With mine, it would just click, like a low battery. In fact, I almost changed the battery before I headed west. When it finally went bad, I had just rebuilt the skid and had it running to make adjustments. I shut it down, to check all fluid levels when hot. Then when I tried to restart, click is all I heard. This time though, all of the lights and dash about went out when I turned the key, like a major draw. I check the amp draw and it was over 170 draw when trying to start. Thats when I knew it was the starter.

With the Venture, I had to pull the exhaust back and donuts out. Then tip the motor forward and then there was access.
