Thanks Grizz, I had already used the FAQ thread. That is what lead to me finding out Yamaha calls a solenoid a relay. I will be putting a cover on it like you did or I might just move all the relays to a safer drier spot. The contact or top side is all green and corroded. I will also pack the top with grease and I ordered a red relay to be safe. Thanks to everyone for the input!

I'm having same issue...mine clicks...wont cross over at relay but if i put screwdriver on black wire on starter and put power to it from red jumper cable it whirls over...is this a starter issue? I put a new shaft in my starter recentlyThe starter relay gets moisture in it and after sitting the mechanical contacts corrode. When the key is turned you'll still here a click which is the contacts coming together but due to the corrosion the starter won't be energized. Because you hear a click everything up to the relay is working properly. The only other issues would be a poorly charged battery or a bad starter but by jumping the relay you narrowed the problem down to a bad starter relay.

Thanks....SO i unplug the starter relay i lose fuel pump, if i plug it in i get fuel pump back...can the relay still be faulty even tho the pump engages? or is this starter related once againlook at this for start issues: http://ty4stroke.com/threads/starter-system-troubleshooting.105358/#post-931403

The starter relay is just a "holder" for the fuel pump fuse. The internal components of the relay have no influence on the operation of the fuel pump. As long as the connector on the relay and the fuse socket is clean and free of corrosion there shouldn't be any issues with the fuel pump circuit. The internal contacts in the relay close to energize the starter circuit and most failures are due to moisture and corrosion on the contacts. Most starter failures are caused by the relay contacts sticking together in a closed position so the starter continues to run after the engine is started.

i replaced starter last week,,,shaft was broke from windings....i now put used starter in.,,,i took satrter out today looks like brushesh failed in this one....i put 700 miles on so i dont thinbk the realy is sticking?The starter relay is just a "holder" for the fuel pump fuse. I always replace the relay if changing the starter. The relay isn't overly expensive and it may prevent premature starter failure.

SO i get starter back on today...clicking noise goes away, it whirls over but doesn't catch anything...Sounds like it did when i first encountered this problem when the shaft was broke...this shaft seems fine...im so confused and ratttttttledI always replace the relay if changing the starter. Pull the stator cover and check the starter gear. It's a gear with a one way clutch (bearing). It might have teeth missing or the one way clutch isn't working.

Teeth seem fine, no sign of metal, its spins but only one way. Before i took the starter off today, i put direct power to it, it whirled the sled over, but it would not cross over at relay..so took starter off brushes messed up..fixed issue put back in now just whirls n whirls but dont catchPull the stator cover and check the starter gear. It's a gear with a one way clutch (bearing). It might have teeth missing or the one way clutch isn't working.

i have not pulled cover. its a bigger job them im comfy with. This is to much now as it is. I just put my hand in the hole the starter goes into...everything i can feel has teeth

There is nothing technical in pulling the cover. it's just the process of making enough clearance to remove it that is a little time consuming. If you can pull the starter then I'd say your capable of pulling the stator cover.

You said the starter shaft broke which is not a normal failure. Something inside the stator cover might have locked up and caused the shaft to brake. The starter relays are known to fail in a closed circuit state which after the engine is running locks the starter to the engine rpm's and eventually destroys something in the starter mechanism. When this happens there is no indication the relay is stuck and it's not detected until the next start attempt after the damage is done.
