Last week I posted that my starter quit on me. I got it back from the dealer Friday and I saw the starter. The magnet was shattered into a dozen pieces. No missing teeth on the starter or the ring gear. They had no speculation about how the magnet got shattered. I've never seen it before.

Same issue up here with starter and ring gear being stripped. I haven't had the problem yet but many buds have required a tow. Dealer advised not to short start, but rather after the fuel pump cycles up, to hod the key open and not release it immediately. Not certain why this "holding" was recommended.

The viper starter has a one way bearing, the gear is always engaged to ring gear. It does not hurt it to run the starter until the sled completely starts, its actually better for it as the motor cannot kick back against the starter.Same issue up here with starter and ring gear being stripped. EXACTLY!!! people are afraid to hold the key on that extra second, its much better than letting off and having the unit stall/kick. Procedure, turn key, unit starts, are you sure its started, 100% sure its started....let go of key. lol hold it for 2-3 seconds will not damage ANYTHING!The viper starter has a one way bearing, the gear is always engaged to ring gear. Thanks for the info, mine starts smoother when I hold the key longer. Kicked back a couple of times, didn't sound right so I just hold it till it starts. Hope this saves are starters.

Anybody hearing the kick back when u shut the sled off? Mine does it quite a bit, I'm thinking this does as much or more damage than a kick back on start up. Just take notice the next few times when u shut your sled off

No, mine went at 2700 miles, but this past week I've payed a lot more attention to startup and shutdown and have been noticing the kick back at shutdown and I know it's been kind of a common thing now that I actually think about what the noise is.

Do you idle yours for a minute or two after stopping, or just roll up and shut off?

Some Vipers kickback more than others when shutting off, you're this does cause premature wear but because the starter is not engaged it's harder on the one-way bearing then anything else. But when the oneway gets worn it's harder on the starter. There's no win here.Anybody hearing the kick back when u shut the sled off? Most always just roll up and stop, on occasion it'll idle for 10-15 seconds, but haven't had the time to notice yet if there's a certain rhyme or reason when it does it.

I was thinking about this kickback thing... As I understand it, this starter stays engaged in the ring gear at all times. I've seen the starter. there is no bendix. So it must stay engaged. The one way bearing makes this possible by transmitting torque only in one direction. The direction of engine rotation. So if the engine kicks back there shouldn't be any torque transmitted to the starter. Theoretically anyway. I can tell you though...it sounds bad when it happens.
