I just noticed that my engine access plate screws are internal hex or allen drive on my 07 Rage. These would be better than phillips if you were to replace them. G.B.
I removed the lower panel underneith the oil reservoir without issue today using a cordless drill and a #3 Phillips bit. It took all the torque that drill had just to back the screws out, but I didn't strip a single one. Just apply liberal pressure as you're backing them out. I don't think I could have done it with a screwdriver - they are really tight!
I stripped a bunch of these same screws doing the first oil change on my 06 Vector. Creating a "custom" screwdriver is one answer but then you have to remember to add it to your tool kit for the trail. I just went to the hardware store and bought some stainless screws with phillips head. Has worked perfect since.
