Studding an XTX

stopdropanroll said:
Ok, here is what I have come up with.......attn: guys wanting to ONLY run double backers on thier XTX. This is a Firecat/Sabercat woody's stud template for 128/144 inch tracks that at first I tried to cut it in the center and widen it........but..... the windows on the XTX are HUGE, thus making the studs to close fore comfort to the windows ( about a 1/4 inch). So having a Firecat,a Nytro RTX with a 1.25x16x136 doo track on it, and my XTX all in the shop I did some comparing to make sure this would work. Its simple, I added some thin cardboard to the one end of the template with superglue and widened the track openings by 5/8 of an inch on each end.........thats it. I put it on the track and it seems to be perfect.

Pics coming......having problems loading.........

thats what I want to run...guess I'll have to find the woodys template and attempt to do your mod to it..
:-o

hey daranello, what is that spring or ice scratcher you have under your running board? That looks like it would work really well. You have a brand name for those? Thanks

check out summitseeker ice scratchers ...an awesome idea for thos with reverse!

any idea where I can find some info or pictures of summitseekers? I can't find any real info on them, or where to see or buy them, Thanks

You can find summitseeker on the snowest forum...

SJ...I bought a set of summitseeker ice scratchers and they are the rail mount ones not the cable ones (just like the ones on the skis you didn't like )...Maybe you mean the side kicks cable ice scratchers???

oops you are right! its not that I dont like the spring style...I just know Im forgetful and would end up ruining a set way before they'd wear out!

the sidekicks seem SJ proof :drink:

I'm thinking of putting a peice of hockey tape on my reverse handle to remind me to check the scratchers...did a lot of reading over on snowest and most think the rail mount ones work the best...

geez...you cant find a good pattern for this track...I want to run closest to the rail and not the center...
any ideas are appreciated

Daranello,

What pattern is that? Also, where did you buy the top guns too?

RR

Woodies Pattern, got them from my Yamaha Dealer, they match Royal's price...Paid $1.49 CND (1.375") Stud, Air Lite XL Polymer Backers Washer Lighter then aluminum.Made of DUPONT polymers and Lock Nut!!!!......Im very happy with the studs, in the past I have run Studboys and Woodies, IMO Top Gun are better because of the shoulderless design and the polimer backers...BTW ran the platic backers @ -38c and not one broken after 3000km's

BTW: I got the XL backers there bigger and have what I call a turtle neck...this way you dont need to run a heavy tall nut

Can you run these with woody's studs?

I ran those backers on mine with the woodys megabites, and a slightly larger nut than the ones in the picture. 1500 hard miles, alot of them in very poor snow conditions and never had a single stud bend or break, or a backer break and didn't have any pull throughs. I'm gonna run the same set up with my cobra track.

yes you can ........ not intended for these but you can...Ive got some for you andy call me at work

I see a lot of people stud just near the rails. I know you do this because its stronger and less likely to pull through and a couple other reasons. I have done this before and on ice it would just dig two fat trenches. To me for what I wanted which was performance I am going to go with the 171 pattern from woodies. I feel the more scratch lines the better hook up off the line. I am boosted so I will need all the help I can get. I am also goin to use the angled backers, not for the advantage of stopping but its kind of a trick of some drag racer I picked up on. You turn the backer around and put it on backwards compared to the directions. Not only does this give you really good bite but also it doesnt off set the whole so you dont have to spend time lining it back up so it will be centered. I was a skeptic until I did this on my mach z 1000 and WOW what a difference  I would not of believed it until I tried it. I am also going to be using roetin hornets, I have had real good luck with these and they have a smaller diameter shaft which I feel allows superior penetration. I thought they would be weak because of this but have had really good luck with these. I got a really good deal on them, I paid a 1.60$ a stud with regular nuts . Well their my 2 cents

I agree about the scratch lines, the more the better in my opinion. Which is why I dont like using a template for studding... I dont want all my studs digging in the same few trenches. Its just how i've always done it.

The reason why most people run close to the rails is because of the exhaust. You will hit if you run down the center and also on an Apex it would hit the center shock and the exhaust... To me it's not about how many, but how long the stud is.... I have seen less studs that are longer work better, then what is recommended from the studding company...
