Hi guys,
I am thinking of putting an s/c on my 07 Apex with a 144" rail kit on it. I trail ride but mostly lake ride. Most riding is at 1100' and flat.
The mpg numbers have me worried. I like to ride the lakes around here and fuel is scarce....91 octane more scarce. I know there are options to dump the exhaust into the tunnel and move the tail light to carry more fuel...
I guess I just want some good honest information to help me make a choice. Please share information on mileage, top speeds, the type of riding you do etc. Pm me if you want to keep the info private, I won't pass it on if you ask me not to.

Fuel mileage is determined on how hard you ride it, If you just cruise it should be fine, but from what I have seen on our S/C sled and turbo sleds was around 9-10MPG and that is riding like a crazy man!. As for fuel octane, if you have a hard time getting good fuel, call Dave @ Hurricane Performance, he is in Ontario as well, he will set you up with a meth system, and he has some other tricks as well.
 
I ride the exact same way you do and had my first 1500 miles on mu first boosted sled this year a SC apex.

I got 8.5mpg riding HARD

I got around 10-11mpg riding easy.

Fuel range is a issue if you ride with other sleds that dont have a issue, I happen to ride with doo 800 revs and we get the same range.

About 65-75 miles the low fuel light comes on and I am looking for fuel. When i fill it always shows about 2 gallons left so I think if I had to I could squeek another 15-20 miles but that would be pushing it. You dont want to make a habit of running the sled out of fuel.

I have mine set up for 10 psi on a head shim for 91 octane fuel, I think if you left the engine alone ran 5 psi you can get better mpg then me.

I used torco and 87 on one tank and it worked and held the engine together.

I will be researching ways this summer to get 11mpg+ consitantly or figuring out a way to conceal and carry a gallon or two off gas.

This is the only draw back of the SC, its crazy on the trails, super reliable, and you never stop smiling.

Made one using a small throttle body with the spring inverted....

a 2nd throttle cable going to the throttle and when I push throttle, it close that TB, release, it open the tb so it dump...
 
Jamie , I run the MPI Bypass valve with a 5lb spring , wound out all the way ( soft ) , when I cruise under 110km and hold a steady throttle position , boost bleeds off to under 1 lbs.
Touch the throttle , no lag at all, closes and builds boost Now!
Milage close to 15 mpg in Quebec last week , 2898 km.
Of course less when wot.
 
That is what I was thinking I did a lot of light load cruising at 60-80mph and it was running 6-10lbs of boost and I dont need any at that speed, when I want it I will got WOT. I guess a turbo does this but then you have to deal with headers and heat.

A load based dump valve would be awesome!
 
Please forgive me in advance for my lack of knowledge...lol. When I mentioned this to a very mechanically inclinded buddy he replied "but aren't you still using the same amount of fuel? you are still producing boost , it is just getting dumped."
What should I tell him? lol

You are dumping boost BEFORE the throttle bodies (and injectors) or carbs so the cylinders are not seeing that boost and hence don't get additional fuel...

If you don't dump it, you cruise along making boost at part throttle (at idele for that matter) and of course adding fuel to match, because a SC makes boost based on RPM and not load like a turbo.
 
Also the fuel controller is boost sensitive for the percentage of boost fuel it can add.
Meaning at .5 lbs added fuel available is approx 10%
(now I can choose how much I want at a given load , ( 0-10%)
at 2. lbs added fuel available is approx 25% (0-25%)
at 6. lbs added fuel available is approx 100% (0-100%)


" Load " is a factor of snow conditions and rpms , variable because of our clutches.
