You can't use oil that says "energy conserving", no matter if it's synth or not. Apparently that's what causes starter damage. The starter clutch is actually in the engine oil.

Not saying it isn't true or I don't believe you but is there anyway you can post up this info or are you just hearing it from someone?
I know with my Grizzly atv you weren't suppose to run the energy conserving oil due to the wet clutch so is this starter clutch basically the same?
Personally I can see the issue(s) as I assume the starter clutch is only used when the engine is started and then remains idle until the next time unlike a wet clutch which is in use full time as long as the atv is mobile?
Just curious and asking is all.
It's written in your User Manual.....
API SE, SF, SG or higher but not higher grade than CD to prevent starter clutch slippage. No oil additive and also no "Energy Conserving II" or better. Those have Teflon tm and other additives which is not compatible with wet clutch starter.
Not from Joe the Plumber, just the User Manual.

Thanks for the info, I will be sure to look it up.
Just asking again(newbie) but aren't a lot of people running Mobil-1 0W-30/40 in their sleds?
Is that not energy conserving and if so, have any/many had issues?

I use Mobil 1 0W40, no problem. I checked and confirmed it's NOT Energy Conserving.

Good to know, I think I will run that in my next oil change as Yamalube is way overpriced in my opinion. (personal choice)

Just check and see if it is Energy Conserving II or not?
I haven't checked my manual yet but when I do and see what exactly is required, I will buy the appropriate oil.

Mooseman and Aventure, I just checked my owner's manual (under specifications) and all it says it there is
"Recommended grade:
API service SG type or higher, JASO standard MA. Type 0W-30
Nothing is mentioned about energy or non-energy conserving oil?
Unless there are some updates/bulletins or different recommendations for different models, I see no issues running energy conserving oil?

If its the powersports one, they even advertise it as being good for Yamaha four strokes so I wouldn't worry about it. That is what I will be using when I change my oil for the first time. I use it in my quad and it is great stuff.

It is the power sports one
