Tabs on oem upgrade stainless steel header

What are they for? Something on a newer apex? Just curious...

My understanding is that those tabs were to block out snow/snow dust from entering the area where the header pipes connect to the flex pipes and prevent the header pipes from cracking (i.e. hot pipes + cold snow = cracked pipe).

Dadgum...I think you're right ! Just got the exhaust done and it sure matches up with the tunnel!
(not on the original titanium pipe on the left. It and the donuts were perfect, so I reused the pipes).
