You need to update your tune.
Yep TD has a header-specific version of the MS 17 tune.
You need to update your tune.
Looks like an upgrade coming then. Thanks. You need to update your tune.
Okay thanks! I guess I need a education on tunes and this 3 bar stuff. I usually hang out in one bar! Lol. So what does the 3 bar do? Thanks Jeff.
290 is Max Spool 17 without header or fuel pump. Max Spool 17 with header/fuel pump is 305. TD came out with header-specific tunes this year. Just so you know, the hp numbers we/they use to identify the tunes is becoming less relevant because TD adjusts the tune for each variable (e.g., header v. no header, stock fuel pump v. upgraded pump, 3-bar v. stock 2-bar, etc.). I view this as a good thing. They're constantly fine-tuning their tunes and making them variable-specific.

Good info, now that I have confidence in my clutch and belt (xs825)set up, I am thinking of the next step up from my Max Spool 16 tune, and this 290 hp tune with it's cheaper upgrade costs have me itching for a bit more hp!
So which TD muffler is needed to achieve the full 290 hp with the MS 17 tune?
She’s been tough tested again this year with nothing but primary roller wear! This thing sees 120 and over, many many times daily, and the xs825 still looks new. It does take different clutch settings then the JP, but it is tough!
2 weeks in a row, it got tested many times on the County Trails, and passed with flying Blue colors! Ha Ha.
You don't need the pump for the MS17 290 tune.I do have the 3 bar and BOV already, so from what I read from some here, the bigger pump may not be needed? Or is it?
Which exhaust for the 290?
You don't need the pump for the MS17 290 tune.
Thanks... I'm running an MBRP race exhaust. Sounds wicked but moving up to a 3" next year. Thanks for the reply!
Impressive speeds with your set up. That 1” track rolls faster.
what exhaust are you using on your 290 MS 17 tune?
If I remember correctly, Ben recommends 91 for powertrail. Ecotrail is the only one claimed safe for 87.Here is my 5 cents....
Factory 2 bar sensor only allows ecu to read up to 16.9 lbs boost, so OK for Powertrail, and Max 17, but the bigger tunes require 3 bar, and is a must for MS17, MS20, Race tunes etc.
The bigger fuel pump allows you to run lower octane, and I highly recommend it if running MS17 or higher. Otherwise, you will have to mix race fuel/octane boost, which gets old fast. With the big pump/3 bar, you can safely trail ride MS17 on 91 octane, pending that is what actually came out of the pump.
IMO, Max17 not much different than PT and not worth it. MS17 is much more violent, and the extra $325 in auxillary hardware is worth the price of admission, but you need good 91. On good 91, you can operate MS17 without issue, but if racing back to back long pulls WOT in excess of a mile in length you would need 93 octane to keep the knock light at bay, especially if conditions are mealy/parasitic.
MS17 can be run with a header, but since the header flows more, boost will drop a pound or 2. Upgrading to MS17 Header Tune will restore the 1-2 lbs of boost the header loses due to flow and will bump up power and speed. In my circle of acquaintances, the guys with headers are faster than the guys without. Be advised, you can run MS17 with a header, you CAN NOT run MS17 Header Tune with stock manifold. It will overboost, and could cause damage.
The header also allows more power with less octane, hence you are less prone to knock on those long, drawn out, World War 3, knock down, drag out races, when you need to annihilate 3-4 people in a row, back to back!! Yes, the header is pricey, but if you absolutely, positively, unequivocally, without a doubt have to be the KING, it's the price of admission.
That being said, if you arent a racer, and you want a reliable tune that is strong, cheap, reliable, and will run on 87 octane without issue, Powertrail is hard to beat.

I recommend td 3inch or sandle 3inch both great exhaustThanks... I'm running an MBRP race exhaust. Sounds wicked but moving up to a 3" next year.
If you plan on riding the County Trails on MS17, the big pump is an absolute necessity. Even with the big pump, if you give her the beans, those back to back long stretches will requure good fuel.
The 2.5 SQ is one hell of a muffler, and I have yet to hear anything quieter than flows more! Anything other than the 2.5 SQ will guarantee you a ticket in Maine, and still, you are rolling the dice.
