I have a 2007 nytro (RS style). Upgrading the runners to deuce bars or another dual carbide runner will greatly help the hunting/darting. I'm trying snowtrackers this year. Real world top end for my nytro is around 90-95 mph. Torque and low end grunt for trail riding is awesome. IMO no cluthing required and I've had no problems with the motor in 5000 kms. I rode ski-doo for 20+ years and this is my first four stroke and Yami. It is hands down the best sled I have ever owned and the motor is phenomenal. I had to add two wheel kits to help the slides out and that's pretty much it. I will not go back to a two stroke. BTW my last sled was a 2004 rev 500 ss.

I think a lot of the control issues depend on the year and model you are looking at. I would narrow it down to maybe two sleds IMO. Two that fit your riding style and position. Me I liked rider forward, and agressive. So I went with the 08 Nytro RTX. Reason it was slightly used and a hell of a deal. The savings left me money to make changes to the front, and rear suspension. No matter what sled, what brand, and how new you buy there are a couple of negatives; but if you are starting out with dependabilty, a great engine, 3-4 year bumper to bumper warranty, and four stroke ease. It is just tweaking from there.
The only real negative the have that is hard to fix is weight. My thinking on that is, you can only take so much stuff offf of a sled, and keep adding horsepower til there is a breaking point. Yamaha is not willing to jepordize quality for the breaking point. If you get great torque, and good power; you are going to get a frame that can handle it. Not a coat hanger frame with a seat and 150HP.

My '03 RX-1 is heavily modded turbo sled made to perform to my likings, I also have a bone stock '08 Apex for long distance trail cruising.
My turbo sled have lived thru 3 seasons turbo charged running the last two seasons at 280+ HP, after running 7000 kms or 4375 miles both motor, drive train and chassis are still holding together, never blown a belt either. Dependability is #1 on a Yamaha.
The '08 Apex RTX is a great trail cruiser that also takes the bumps fairly well, for the extreme rider I would recommend a shock rebuild installing a tripple shim stack in the rear main shock.
Testride the Yamaha sleds you are interested in, it's the only way for you to find out what you like. Before the test ride, if possible, adjust the suspension to your riding style and weight and let it rip.

OK heritage, i'll answer each question as honest as possible. I drive '06 APEX. 1. Yes they dart. 5.7 ski's & 13mm sway bar & all fixed. 2. '08 Nytro was designed to steer faster, but they got twitchy so Yamaha reidid some geometry to fix this. 3. real world GPS speeds are 112-115 stock & everything normal. 4. APEX models don't need re-clutching. Very little gains for money & sometimes losses. At least not as big of gains as most are used to seeing in a 2-stoke. Yamaha clutching is spot on for most. 5. Motors are bullet-proof & addicting. Friends & i have 100,000 miles total with not 1 engine problem. Hope this helps & now some brutal honesty. These are great groomed trail & moderate bump sleds. All sleds need to be dialed in to riding style & conditions no matter what it is. This site is the greatest website for help & info that i've found...PERIOD. If you ditchbang, then buy something else. If mostly groomed trails & lakes, then Yammi is hard to beat...

I feel your pain and COMPLETELY understand all of your questions. My last Yamaha was also the famed Viper. I was the laughing stock of my buddies due to the very poor ride of this machine. NONE of my friends wanted to drive it after taking just one ride on it. So my Viper went to the auction and I jumped ship and went with Cat's ride and was not dissapointed.
In 2006 the New Yamaha Attak came out. I was VERY LEARY of putting down $11,000. large on a sled that may still ride like the old Viper. So I did my home work as you, and started "lurking" on TY and every once in a while...I would ask a question. I was absolutly terrified that this sled would ride like the old Viper as I'm getting older and COMFORT is the most important thing I look for now.......along with the reliability of a 4 stroke motor.
I will honestly tell you.......this 2006 Yamaha Attak I purchased and currently own........is the most comfortable sled I have ever ridden. It's heavy.....but I have learned to stay on the trails. And other than the hand warmers......I have not been dissapointed with this sled. I no longer have a sore back due to the rider forward position and smooth ride of the rear suspension. This sled is VERY COMFORTABLE on long trail rides.......I even wore out my buddies that owned the great riding Cats.
However, having said that, I WILL NOT purchase or up-grade to a newer model year Yamaha until the HAND WARMERS GET HOT!!! I have the ROCKER DAN up-grade to my 06 bars and am completely satisfied with my sled. The hand warmers are my biggest concern as I want COMFORT.
I took care of the darting by just adding Woody's Doolys to the original skis.
This is just my opinion.....but after reading your original post of owning a Viper......I felt I could honestly understand your caution. In my honest opinion.....you SHOULD purchase an 06 or newer Apex or Attak, or what ever the Attak is called now and get the darting taken care of and hand warmers taken care of and you won't ever look back......you will LOVE the ride.
And in closing, I would like to give a great big THANK YOU to all the TY members that give so much great information......It was all of you......that got me back to Yamaha!
And I couldn't close without giving another great big THANK YOU to ROCKER DAN! I honestly could not ride that sled when the temps were below 15 F. THANKS DAN!!!!!

your best bet is a apex i have an 06 rtx. everyone i ride with has a ski doo. everyone that rode it said it was better then the revs just it was a little heavier i like it that way imo the skidoos are to light. the apex can rail corners and ride awesome i have a revalved shock and a bigboy spring but. i think the ski doo soaks up the real big bumps. but the engine and handling are way better imo then the doo. i havnt ridden the xp but my buddy just got a 09800xp x so i will get a chance. but i think if you dont do a lot of off trail you will be ok and less tired on a 300 mi day on the yamaha

EVery two stroke friend I had ride my Nytro they LOVE it,One kid road it yesterday and says " Thank man,Now I don't want to ride my sled anymore" They love my sled!
