I'm not sure it would work with separate insurance companies. One thing is for sure is we have a lot more sleds registered with trail passes and the trails are better marked and safer. We have to also give the SSA and the individual clubs credit for all their hard work. It took years of lobbying the provincial govt. to bring about the all in fees. So now the govt. is involved, they are standardizing the trail signs and the use of them, which is really a benefit to all of use who uses the trails.

Irv said:Sasquatch, I get what you are saying, I really do and after reading your post I understand more of the issues you are facing in the north.
But my question is, if the permit is lumped in with the Val tag (Which I think is a good idea) will those people not just avoid buying those as well or sell their sled altogether once they see the val tag is now a lot more expensive due to the permit being a part of it?
I know of fines etc for not having a val tag but how are you going to police it when one of the reasons people give up sledding is due to the amount of Police presence on the trails?
Just asking.
Irv they have the choice to not sled anymore and some will go down that route but it will not be (in our area) 2,000 sleds worth opting out. So if you loose 200 or even 400 no big deal. People can sell out if they want but others will buy in so in the end after the snow settles and people realise that they now have a part ownership in the trail system. They will use it and become more a part of it then they have been. I see a larger base of volunteers to pick from.
One can not buy insurance without a Val tag and no insurance is a 5,000 dollar fine now I belive. Big risk to save a 100 bucks or so. There will be some for sure but how many want to risk the fine or loosing all they have worked for when sued!
The OPP patrol our trails with their sleds now. Plus all our special events. I rather doubt if they will need to step up patrols that much but so be it if they do! Heck we lend our club sleds to the local town police so they can patrol the town and surrounding area that is theirs to look after.

Rode the North of Sakatchewan last winter up around Hudson Bay area came in from Swan River Man and back into Manitoba at Benito. Trails where great up there signage was good. This winter we are coming back and going further west and then south before back into Manitoba. I think its the old route 66 trail down to Yorkton from Candle Waskasou Lake area I want to take!
I buy a Manitoba pass every year so the ability to sled Saskatchewan with it is awesome. You guys keep up the good work out there I appreciate it!

I was at Kelvington twice last year as we had no snow. Very nice. We are further south at Fort Qu'Appelle. As Sasquatch said, there will be some that won't register their sleds. We have some in the north, but you cannot attend a public function (derby, etc.) without plates. The RCMP check at the rally point. Last year at the Kelvington rally I think there were 4 or 5 charged with no registration. also a few DUI. People just don't learn.

Yeah, I agree, as you would still have 1500+ that would buy a permit and that would definitely a BIG help!
But, what you suggest, is that even possible here in Ontario? I know different Provinces have different rules/regs when it comes to MTO rules/regs etc and thinking just because Manitoba or Quebec does it doesn't mean it is even possible here in Ontario?
I like the idea a lot, don't get me wrong, but is it even doable, especially since the far North doesn't even have to pay for their Val tags?
And like I have said in the past, do you or the OFSC want to get in bed with the Gov't here in Ontario? Personally, I don't trust them and I can only see these types of problems getting worse not better?
Good luck in your quest, I appreciate your efforts

I'd rather the Gov run OFSC..the guys at corperate are a bunch of boozo's...NOTtalking about the guys at club level....
For example the groomer operator that died in Parry Sound...they really stuck it to the club and that poor girl
The STOP program is gone to the dogs...
its turned from a grass route thing to big buisness BS.

anther think you DONT need a permit to ride OFSC trails on CROWN LAND...only over private property...so many people in the north don't buy permits cause of this fact alone...
OFSC needs to team up with MTO and add it to the Val tags and be done with the trail permit BS
EDIT: I still buy a permit every year....But why should I pay more to support many riders that are getting a free ride???

My answer is get off the north not paying for their val tags its a non issue and then yes, in bed sheets pulled up tight. Problems never go away then only change and you change to face them. One problem at a time wins the race.

I agree and I too buy a permit every year and every year I wonder why! Every year I volunteer and every year I wonder why as another sled goes by without a permit. Every year I talk up the trail permit and every year I get shot down, yelled at, given the finger and generaly berated with verbal abuse by those who hate the club and OFSC and every year I say this is my last year! I guess if it wasn't for the few who buy permits and appreciate the work involved I'd have quit long ago but this year I'm ready to say enough is enough! I'm just tired and burnt out!

As I previously said the north would have to be included in the val. tag system .The bottom line in this post is clear the average rider has had enough and is not willing to absorb the cost for free loadersDaranello said:Sasquatch said:Daranello said:anther think you DONT need a permit to ride OFSC trails on CROWN LAND...only over private property...so many people in the north don't buy permits cause of this fact alone...

Only one problem with the government getting involved....As soon as McGuinty sees it he will have us riding electric solar powered sleds

Personally I have no trust in the government or the OFSC , but I'd rather deal with one devil than two
