Sled started blowing massive blue smoke & oil out of the exhaust yesterday .
Did a bunch of heavy pulls and climbs for most of the day , sled was running awesome . At the end of the day as we were heading back I started noticing massive smoke . As far as I can tell it's getting full oil flow from the oil system , no jets inline . It's a Garrett 2860 . should I install a jet inline to restrict oil flow after repairing it ? I was towed back , but my sled ran fine , I climbed out of a couple of large hills under my own power , and the engine sounded great , (that's why i think it's the turbo oil seals ) .

Tim I doubt its seals, could be but most likely its no restrictor in the oil line, or too much crank case pressure caused by blow by, check compression and due a leak down test, is your vent plugged. these are what I would check first, how much boost are you running.

I've got a large crankcase vent filter , that's the first thing I checked . It was nice and clean too ( no blowby ). Oil is being pumped directly into the exhaust , I actually had a fire in the tunnel briefly .Pretty sure it's turbo / oil supply related. Engine is fine. I was running about 16 psi all day .

It's pretty much impossible to have a seal go bad on a gt chra. The seals are metal and unless you have a catastrophic turbo failure your seals are not going to go bad. Everyone should be running a oil restrictor. The turbo can blow oil out the exhaust side and compressor side with out one. Not only that, but the oil going through your intake drops effeciency of your intercooler, foul plugs, and run the risk of running low on oil if your not careful.

Was your crank case vent hose free to breath. I had the same problem on the hill, but I had a filter on the end of it, it got froze over with ice and oil and was causing oil to spit out the turbine side of my turbo with a lot of white smoke.

Thats good does,t sound like crank case pressure, I would put a restrictor in and see what happens, as has been said most likely not seals, if the restrictor doesn,t help then I would look at the turbo.

I was there and the crank vent was free to breathe, no ice or snow build up at all. I was thinking seals as well but since they are metal that is new to me, maybe a flow jet for the oil would be the ticket. But why would it run like a champ all day everyday without smoking and then all of the sudden do this is my question?

I agree it should have had problems right away, maybe oil return has a restriction in it, thats why I suspected crank case pressure, was there any excessive oil coming out the vent.

I ran the oil return like Ted Jannety recommends to the side cover behind the primary clutch , it seemed to be working real nice , the slight blue smoke that I used to have when the engine was cold was gone , seemed to be flowing much better than it was to the valve cover. Weird . I guess I'll know more after I get in in and thawed out .

thats how I had my oil return set up worked good, if there was no excessive oil coming from your vent then its not crank case pressure, hopefully just the lack of a restrictor in the oil line, any slop in the compressor wheel.

You Should have a 0.035 restrictor in the feed hose to the turbo.
I stock them, this is what they look like you need one even though there is 2 in the picture.

That's sweet ! I ended up using a mikuni pilot jet in my other sled ,just tapped the inside of the steel line and screwed it in there . I like your idea much better though .

Ok ..............drilled and tapped the oil ine fitting for a mikuni pilot jet , getting ready to fire it up . Wish me luck . :drink:
