Well, I fell victim to turning my primary backward (clockwise) while doing clutch work.

This thread talks about the issue, for those unfamiliar: https://ty4stroke.com/threads/alway...ent-issues-when-changing-clutch-parts.148632/

I heard some grinding and clicking sounds when I did it, and thought "that can't be good."

Then I went to start the sled, and it does not start - only making a popping / backfiring sound when turning over. So I guess I may have also damaged valves or pistons while doing this...

So what's next? Can I assess the damage, maybe even fix it without pulling the motor? From what I've read, it looks like cam parts / tensioner /etc may need to be replaced.

Now the motor has to come apart to fix it. Let hope your starting it didnt do more damage.

First I would tip the engine enough to get at the tensioner and set it back in time. I would pull the valve cover and check valve lash, a bent valve would be loose. if it looks good, do a compression test

: (

Still can't believe how sensitive the internals are to simple clutch rotation...

Follow-up:
4 intake valves bent
2 exhaust valves bent

Working on getting it back together
