Hi this will be my first post on this forum . just spent the day riding a 07 phaser mtn i just picked up. ran good all day, shut it off a started up several times no problems. Stoped off at a buddies to show him the new sled, went to leave after three hrs,an the damm thing wouldnt turn over fast enough to fire up. after four tries ,I tried to boost it with another sled,no difference.I left it there over nite , I picked a new battery thinking that the old one was done, put it in ,same thing, without turning the key fully off (trying to avoid flooding) tried five times and it turned slower and slower each time until only got relay clicking . even tried putting my charger on boost mode for one attempt ,no difference. its as if my starter is dragging. any advice as to where to start would be great. Thanks

Common problem on 07-09 phazers. The 2 long bolts that hold the starter together get loose and the starter comes out of alignment and "drags". You might be lucky and there wasn't any damage done to the starter yet and you could line it back up, put loctite on the case bolts, and install it and see if its working good again. I pulled the starter on mine when I changed the oil filter and my bolts were getting loose but I caught it In time.

turning over slow

I will have the starter out this afternoon and will see if the bolts are already loose.I also talked to my closest dealer (Soo Michigan) and he tells me that he has seen the end cap on the starter shift or spin ,causing a misalignment of the brushes. I will also look into that once i get the starter off. Thanks for any and all input.

turning over slow

OK, I got the starter out. WOW !!! Yes the draw bolts were loose. I can see two cast tabs on either end which i assume are alignment marks. Its the middle section that dosnt seem to have a clear mark accept for a faded green line along its length, which is about .750'' off of the other two, could this be a timing mark ?

Is there anyone who would know how to be sure that the middle section of the starting motor (permanent magnets) is in the proper orientation to the alignment tabs cast onto both ends of the starting motor. Normally starting motors would have some kind of key or location tab to allow for only one way to assemble. This starting motor has none. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

Yes, the green line is the alignment line. Just put it back together with red Loctite on the bolts. This thread at the before last post shows a starter with the alignment marks on each end and the green line out of alignment. Line everything up and you're good to go.

Just be sure to bench test it after to be sure it wasn't also damaged otherwise.

Great, thats all i needed to hear, now I can go ahead and reassemble this thing and get back out on all that snow we just got.just for future referance,I'm not quite sure how to search the archives of this forum for answers to my questions that have already been delt with.Rather than bother you guys by ansering the same questions over and over. once again thanks for the input.

Yeah, the search is not the most user friendly. If you search for more than one word, you have to change it to find all terms. Why this isn't the default, I don't know.
