I initially thought that you were riding a 2011 sled due to the Mega Float shock, but it appears that you have an 08, hence the comments on the rust in your skid.

It is a 2011 but we have over 7000 miles on her now... the powder coating on the skids have never been very good.

well i notice that most of it is at the welds that is a sign that the sled has left the ground a few times as that is the first area to show stress most times.

Thats not true with the yamaha paint.I know plenty of old people that there paint is coming off on the welds and they ride slow.

I agree a lot of times the flux or impurities in the welding filler cause the paint to not adhere to those locations therefore rust sooner than the rest of the suspension components.

seems to me that the japanese have never had good paint/rust protection... look at all those old toyotas and hondas still running around that the body is half gone because of rust

There is probably a much higher percentage of old rusty Hondas and Toyotas on the roads because they actually will keep running reliably long enough to actually give the metal time to rust, whereas most other makes of cars end up in the junk yard before they even get a chance to rust!

I love this answer, and it is soooo very true.

On my 06 i just get clean up the skid the best i can, wire brush by hand any rusty spots and get a can of spray paint and touch up the skid every year. Its not perfect but it always looks new and clean and keeps the rust at bay. I dont care whAt it really looks like to an extent, its usually packed full of ice and snow anyways! ;)
