Viper Turbo Recommendation

I recently purchased an mpi Turbo with the race can, haven't installed it yet, but am wondering if it's a good idea to upgrade to the bigger fuel pump with regulated return, also how much boost is safe till you need a head shim, would like to know what's needed to run max safe boost without head shim.

Lots of guys will have different opinions there..my opinion, the hurricane kits are designed to run at 6 psi, with his bigger injectors that's safe as far as fueling goes. I myself wouldn't push a stock engine past that without a minimum of head studs, so personally I'd draw the line at 6 psi as long as the fuel can keep up. Theres also more that comes into play, fuel and intake temps, clutching, engine temp. I think u know where I'm headed, if you're not a tuner the best bet is to buy a complete kit with the recommended clutching, bolt it all on and have a good time.

Are you saying there is a lot of extra tuning with the hurricane 190HP kit at 6lbs boost or if you go beyond the 6 lbs it get tricky? I was u dear the impression that the 190HP kit was dialed in and just needed clutching.

Every person I've talked to that has a 190 hurricane kit with hurricane clutching says they're spot on. I believe mpi offers some different clutching options but not sure what they are. Some fine tuning on any kit is a possibility but I'd say they're all going to be very close. I wouldn't hesitate a bit to purchase a hurricane kit and to anyone with any mechanical ability at all I'd install it myself. Mpi kits are a lot more in depth as mentioned when it comes to installation, don't let that fool you that it's better or necessary, quite often simple is the best option.

Always a good idea to make sure you have plenty of fuel when it comes to turbos, but all depends on your intentions. If u do decide to go up in boost I'd be careful going past 6 psi on a stock engine, I personally wouldn't go past that. Mine originally could only safely run 5 psi and maintain safer afr. Once I did the bigger fuel pump it was fine at 6 psi but I didn't go past that. I know some guys have gone past that and have been ok, but I have seen others who have had trouble and ruined head gaskets, Pistons, heads, blocks...so you're walking a fine line past 6 psi.

I'm running the Hurricane 190 kit with the quiet muffler, clutching and added a cold air intake..Love the kit 10.8 to 11.2 on afr gauge at WOT. The customer service is amazing ,its quiet, clutching is perfect and pulls hard. The sidewinder will walk past me after 80-90 mph and it has a warranty, but if a new sled isn't an option i would give hurricane a call.

Wow - surprised the Sidewinder pulls past you. What's the HP on Sidewinder? What are you seeing for top speeds with your Hurricane 190HP? Did you change gearing at all? Sounds like the kit is pretty consistent for you.

Same here! I have the hurricane 190 with quiet muffler and left the Gearing stock on my 16 LTX LE! Sidewinder pulls on me around 90 mph but I think corner to corner on a winding trail max maybe 50mph I think I'm quicker as I'm always on him in the straights and my buddy can ride hard. Rode with him since 82. But I have the slp header and had to mod the pcv map quiet a bit because it was in the mid 12s wot with Dave's map. I don't think he mapped with the header.

Oh and my gas millage is better than the winder and on par with a stock 2010 nytro xtx and better than a 2011 xtx with the NA power upgrade with hindle exhaust and airbox / pcv from hurricane. And same as 2016 800etec. That's after roughly 1000miles ride and keeping track.

Our vipers both have MPI's with EABC and Quite muffler and have had zero issues for 2.5 seasons. Turn key, gas and go play. More power then we need but its fun to have. No lag with MPI and gobs of torque down low. Power wise it feels pretty much like all 4 sidewinders I have rode (all off trail). The EABC will adjust the boost 4.5(sea level) to 8 depending on your altitude/barometric pressure to keep boost consistence and at a safe level for the stock sled. An added bonus is that our sleds warranty is still good through 2019 also by sticking with the stock MPI kit.

What HP does your MPI produce? Also, did you do the install or have a dealer install it? If dealer installed, which one?

They are the MPI 180/190 trail kits(Now called the all elevation kit). We installed the kits our self and my dealer updated the VIN on Yamaha's dealer site so they reflect the turbo's have been installed. Yamaha recommends the dealer installs but its not mandatory. Of course most dealers will tell you they have to because they want the work.

I have a used one (Evo) that has 1400 miles on it. 100% complete if you're interested

Thanks, still doing research but will keep that in mind.

I should note, I'm a trail rider 95% of the time so I want a kit that caters to trail riding mainly.

What if you can't find 91 octane fuel in a remote area, do these kits have some type of adjustment to account for that or do you need to carry octane boost just in case. Does that even work?

I was told as long as you don't hold it to the bar, it's OK to run 87, or no more a mile long pull, if it was me I would just carry some torco race gas concentrate, that stuff works great.
