Lol ya I'm not even gonna start with how I feel about Harley's..just one more way that stingrays feelings would get hurt they have patents on their sound somehow but there won't ever be any snowmobile brand lucky enough to get that. There's cheap mods and there's more expensive mods, by the sounds of it you're not going to be able to buy a totally stock viper and have it consistently run 100mph like the rx1..but also with the viper you won't have worn out bushings, exhaust donuts and boggie wheels like the rx1 will give you. The speed the viper lacks from the rx1 it more than gains in ride quality and chassis performance!
As an engineer I want to cry when I see some of the things Harley does. But I own one because I like riding a hard mouthed tough bike, I really do....old school and all. BUT, I want my sled trouble free and smooth.

If you want top speed just get an older SRX and have at 'er.
To me the Viper is a well rounded pkg and that to me counts for more that being good at one thing.
There's not a new sled out there that wouldn't benefit from a good clutch kit.

that's what I'm getting at why do all these aftermarket dealers have to do the homework for the factory engineers

The calibration engineers build for the masses. They also build for reliability during warranty. What they build typically suits 90% of the people. Many of us here are part of the minority that demand more.

Well let's see, you could buy an unproven 800 Polaris engine, or a 3500 mile 800 Etec, or a 800 Cat that has a strong track record for longevity.
Or buy the same machine with a lesser powered 4 stroke that with a little help should hang with any of the above and last.

Jim the viper is the best sled "I" have ever owned and truth be told its not an 85mph sled mine out of the box was 93mph 95mph...its the fastest trail sled I have ridden.. also there isn't the issues that plagued Yamaha with the apex and RX1's exhaust, front end bushings, heat exchangers, hi fax wear not to mention the WEIGHT hahaha.... I can tell ya im a mod kinda guy and I worked endlessly to make my attak fast with out a supercharger or turbo and in reality if I didn't have to fix all of the above issues non stop I could have put a blower on it..... so far 2400 miles on the viper and I have changed the oil and the chaincase..... a new set of hi fax only because its a new season.... VIPER ALL DAY!!!

Agreed every bit of what you said. I will add there is no way I would have bought a new Yamaha if the Viper didn't exist. This is by far the best Yamaha in the last three decades in my opinion.

Ride a turbo Viper and compare, simply amazing. I rode several at the Yamaha demo ride and all I could do was grin after the ride.

Heh, I am actually high bidder right now on a TZ1 at an online auction (for a guest sled). As long as it stays on the road and I don't have to lift I don't mind.

I've been on a couple 1100 turbos, 1 stock and one with a 220hp flash. Stock is def fast but boring, almost as boring as a 2 stroke. The 220hp 1100 I rode was actually right after I did the viper demo ride right after the vipers were released in 2013. Rode the viper, liked the power and snappiness of it, then rode the cat turbo, tho it wasn't as snappy, there was no comparison in the power compared to the viper. On long stretches where you were getting 75-80 on the viper, you were doing 90-100 on the turbo and braking hard for the corners. I've raced a couple cat turbos last year with my stock viper with a clutch kit, turbos were running prolly 260ish hp, maybe a tad more. On a launch the viper comes out hard, a decent amount in front of the turbos but at like 50-60mph the turbos come past and it makes you feel like you're standing still, that's just the attitude of the cat turbo, they aren't real quick off the line because of their weight but once they get going they're monsters! Don't ever feel bad getting beat by an 1100 turbo, even if you're viper has a turbo, sooner or later the extra 50+hp of the cat kicks in and it's go time. Now here's my sales pitch for yamaha, I bought a viper because flat out the 3 cylinder 1049 is an awesome engine. It has instant throttle response where the cat turbo did not, it had yamaha quality where the cat turbo was so/so. Yamaha had a better warranty and the 1100 turbo was $3,000 more than the viper at the time. There's cheap leftover cat turbos out there and I wouldn't blame anyone for getting one. They're an awesome sled and the cheap power potential is like no other machine out there, just remember that with more hp comes more wear and tear and with cats track record for cheap clutches and belts I'd be a bit Nervous about some of the potential problems
