That's an awsome pic.

If anyone from Ontario or who rides there hasn't seen Dorset on a Saturday afternoon they really should. We go all the time but the best I've seen yet was a guy running close to the wall to splash people and he splashed 2 cops. As he was pulling himself up on the ice the cops were waiting for him to give him a Careless Driving ticket. A little serious but still funny.
Was it one of the new light ones opened up like Swiss cheese?

nice footage and tunes.
My brother nearly sunk his 07 Attack last weekend. 3rd pass...slower... belt slip. S&%t his suit. The foam on PTO side was soaked. Seems like the water off the ski was sneaking thru the seam of the side panel. He won,t be puddle jumping again any time soon. Can,t imagine its easy drying out one of these "Toyota,s"

Is this where you guys are running?

I wouldn't mind riding out there to check it out (doubt I'll be taking my sled over the water though...).
Is there a certain time or day?

A previous post talks of sealing up the seams before trying more than one short run. This side door issue can be a problem for the new Doos as well...perhaps that's what happened to that XP...

My girlfriend and I rode up there on Saturday morning and had breakfast over looking the canal not much going on even our waitress said the canal running has been slow this year.
New price is 1050 for a diver and it takes him no time to get your sled out.

Dorset water skipping
I'm up at Dorset almost every weekend, and have only seen a handful of people run the channel this year.
We just missed seeing one sunk on Saturday night at Dorset - rider came into the bar soaking wet and looking for somewhere to get warmed up (and probably a beer too!)
This picture was taken on Sunday, he wasn't running the full channel, but cutting across a corner of the open water.

The Bridge is less risky
I used the bridge when I passed through Dorset in February.
I should practice in some of the puddles currently in my hay fields before I ever attempt real open water. They are only a foot deep!!

- Which one? I have 6
From my experience.........The Apex w/C&A's rock on the water. No problems for distance or to pick up speed, as long as you have good transfer and the wide skis. Long story short.......Actcually towed my turbo last week with my sons Apex GT (due to busted heat excahanger, under running board) over about 45' of open water just after a preasure crack to shore. Mind you it was not by choice. Was committed and could not avoid it. Saw it last minute. Revs with the presision ski's are very unstable on water. Change the skis on them and no problems. My Turbo Warrior is very finiky. Give it too much throtle and it starts to pull sideways. Each slead it different. Best water sled I had was a 800 XCR with C&A's. Could go all day till you ran out of gas.
Here is a Video I am sure a lot of you guys have seen before but its a great water run. Enjoy it.

Its not that the water is coming in through the side panel.
I run water more than you can imagine, and its all on video, and no spray at all gets in through the panel. The water is coming in through the exhaust holes and holes in the tunnel. Water also runs down the running board into the clutch compartment, but that doesnt explain how my
belt slips when the front end is 5-6ft off the ground!
Essentially, dont run any big water until you seal everything, and I havent even done that myself yet, much too big of a job, not enough time and too much mystery.

Also, these pics are all taken right before the belt slipped. There is also another pic with me just running flat water (stock skis) and there is clearly no water spraying anywhere on the plastic, not even close!!

sledheadgeorge, how far have you gone on water with an Apex?
After seeing the pictures and videos linked here, I figured my 07 Apex RTX could handle a little water. My previous Polaris sleds (triple 650's and triple 800's) always did well and could stay on top of water as long as I was willing. I've never looked for water, but I've often crossed small creaks and flooded fields without any issues and I've been doing this for years.
My 07 RTX is a completely different story I have to say...
I went for a 400 km ride yesterday. For the most part the trails were absolutely incredible - as good as any winter riding. Unfortunately there was also a lot of flooded field sections and water starting to flow over the trail near creaks, etc. I avoided the flooded sections as best as I could (taking roads and/or avoiding the water), but there were sections where I couldn't, or the water was relatively minor and not deep.
I could not get my Apex to go more than about 200 feet on slushy snow or water, sometimes no more than 70 feet. It would ride perfectly on top and then all of a sudden, the belt would start slipping and down it would go. Each time I was only in about 2-4" of water so once it sank, I just hit the gas again and clawed my way out of the wet spot.
It also happened crossing a couple of small creeks that were only about 10-20 feet wide (some not much wider than my sled's length), but some lightly flooded into the fields on one or both sides of the creek by up to 100 feet (again only 2-4" deep - except for the creek itself).
Luckily again, it only started to slip when I had enough momentum to make it across the deeper sections. Almost every time it started to slip badly on the short deep section too.
Overall it was very unnerving and I've never in 30 years of spring sledding ever experienced this before.
I also found a perfect 150-200 foot section where the water was between 2-5" deep with a solid ice base (I walked it first) to experiment with. At this point I felt it was essential to understand what this sled could and couldn't do (I'd already had the belt slip a couple of times). It also had a solid trail beside it so I could make the wet stuff as short as I wanted and steer off the water when it started to slip. I tried starting slow (~15-20 mph), starting at mid speeds (50 mph), starting at high speeds (75+ mph), cruising at constant throttle, cruising at reduced throttle, accelerating at WOT, and several different combinations. Nothing worked consistently and although sometimes I could back off on the throttle and get back on it again (without sinking) I didn't find any technique that really worked.
Is this "normal" with our Apex? How are you guys going through so much deep water in the videos without sinking?
Have you guys done anything to stop the water spray from getting on the clutches?
My assumption is water mist must spray forward beside the exhaust pipes and somehow get on the belt.
I had been planning to go for another ride today, but decided against it since the trails will only be wetter today.

Each of the sleds in my videos and pictures are showroom stock...without any sealing of any sort. I've never seen anything like what you're experiencing...that's scarey!! 200ft is short in comparison to what these guys are doing....

It was very scary.
Admittedly, sometimes it was 100 feet running flawlessly, followed by 50 feet of snow and another 200 feet of shallow water, followed by...
You get the point, but still both a big surprise and a very sickening feeling to suddenly and regularly loose power while on the water.
When the belt wasn't slipping on the other hand, it would accelerate extremely well if I wanted it to and pull wheelies, etc.
I have a 1" Predator track instead of the Ripsaw.
One thing I just thought of is my snowflap is the new "stiff" style and I have it pointing down steeply to maximise the snowdust on the hard frozen trails. I also have not shortened the flap at all. Maybe this keeps more water in the tunnel.
Those of you successfully water running, what do you have for a snowflap?
