What do you suggest Yamaha should change for 2011?

I would like to see some of the tecnology from the nytro snowcross macine on the consumer sled.

Weight reduction.
Aluminium cast subframe.
Tank under the seat.
Header and exhaust on top of the tunnel.

This would move the weight backwards on the sled and make it more balanced.
And the exhaust would eliminate the icing problem.

I was told the other day that yamaha has a higher horsepower engine already built and sitting on the shelves waiting. They did not release it this year because of the economy. I was told it produces around 180 hp.

Very possible. Please remember that the current four cylinder snowmobile engine is something like three generations behind the development of the YZF-R1 motorcycle. The 2004-2006 motorcycle engine got a major redesign resulting in much more top end horsepower at almost 2000 rpms more. The 2007-2008 motorcycle engine got the four valve cylinder head with more power at all rpms. And the 2009 motorcycle engine got the crossplane crankshaft concept ("big bang").

Now we need the pneumatic valve lifters and bump the rpms a bit more :)

Isn't the primary clutch the problem in the higher rpm equation? Isn't thats why the 4 cyl motor have this reduction gear to reduce the rpm on the primary? Which adds weight as well.

Or am I wrong?

What about a "bigger" Phazer, 2 cyl 900 cc 4 stroke, built on the YZ450F motor, or something like that. And of course fuel injected. Use the Phazer chassis, better front & rear suspension and really make it light weight. Do two versions; one real light weight boondocking, hill climbing sled (162" track), maybe with a turbo; and one trail banging, snow cross style shorty.

How about that? :)

1. Yes, past 9000 rpms at the clutch and efficiency drops rapidly, so does durability.

2. Yes, on the Apex and RX-1 engines that holds true.

3. Yes it adds weight, but it also adds a counter balance to the crank. In snowX the use of a reduction gear is not allowed, how come, the gear reduction is a torque multiplier, which is beneficial.

4. No, you are not wrong :)

AttakSnow2 - Great suggestion, I agree with you 100% - BTW welcome to the site :)

So why would you want more rpm's then? It would need the reduction gear which adds weight, when you really want a lighter sled ;)!

A slightly taller seat with better gel foam on the Nytro with storage would be great. Maybe flip to the side or somehting, to bypass the exhaust issue.

Or a pipe dream of putting the Apex motor in the Nytro, and about 20 extra HP stock on the Apex. What a dream ;)!

I'd like to see a 180 hp FX Nytro in both 121 and 144 lengths with Float X Evol shocks in the front and Floats in the rear like this years MTX SE. Make it about 50lbs lighter too. Throw in an adjustable height handlebar riser, handwarmers that get HOT, raise the seat height about 3 inches, REAL push button reverse, an updated guage pod, and include an optional 1.5" lug track. Is that too much to ask ??? :exc:

birkebeiner - more rpms makes more power, that's why. I like high revving engines so a 3 banger does not suit me. A high revving engine need to have a reduction gear if you want to turn some high rpms for the primary clutch to survive. I don't care much about the added weight of a 4 cyl high revving engine running a reduction gear. Weight can be saved elsewhere using exotic materials, lets start with a factory Yamaha composite suspension....... :)

More power so I don't have to read the bulletins Arctic Cat sent out to dealers about the 800HO stomping everyone at Haydays this year.
