Move up north to Ellesmere or Baffin Island, or to where I live, and you will have your 6 months of winter. I couldn't get myself to move elsewhere (south) for any amount of money LOL

The Big Bang motor
Any Yamaha enthusiast who follows both the motorcycles and snowmobiles, know that Yamaha changed their 2008 R-1 motorcycle to a "Big Bang" motor for the 2009 model year. It made motorcycle of the year. It's a 4 cylinder with the power and torque that feels like a big twin.
Just wondering if they'll do the same with their 4 cylinder snowmobiles currently in the Apex...Give it the "Big Bang" firing order and make that 4 cylinder Apex feel like a big twin.
I know Yamaha is due for an all new Apex.. model year 2011? or an early mid season introduction?

Looks like all the Yamaha motors will be 4valve motors real soon.2010YZF450 is 4valves and reverse cylinder head FI.

I am no longer sure I would want that. The crossplane crankshaft concept requires quite some addition of material to crankshaft as well as crankcases. Just had a 2009 YZF-R1 on the scale for a comparison against previous models. Damn, it is heavy...!

In the snowmobile world, the 4 cylinder is just to damn heavy, they need to pull the power out of the tripple to keep it light. They can get the power out of it.

Keep & rename Apex to Vector 125 & 150 with all the current models then go white sheet for a new Turbo 150 all new chassis with reduced weight at the top of the line. Go back to cool names like attak, warrior & drop LTX this & that.

You will allways get more power when you add cylinders and up the rpms. Anyone remember the Honda 8 cylinder Grand Prix bike, they banned the 8 cyl cause it made too much power, it's was a long time ago tho.

The apex engine weighs around 140lbs vs a comprable 2 stroke that weighs 60lbs. so your stuck with a 80lbs difference if they could get that out of the chassis and be a legitimate 50lbs heavier (wet) then a XP I think they would win over the weight watcher consumer as most consumers WANT that engine. There is a lot of things they could do to cut weight yet and I personally think they just incrementally make changes so as to not do everything in one model year and have nothing left for each new generation after that.

I'd like to see better options for a buyer when snow checking a sled. A choice of ski, track, windshield, shocks, etc.
We're paying pretty much the same price as a car now, so we should have better options.

x2, but I was told 'cuz of YAM being built in JAPAN it would take to long to get our sleds...all others are in North America which would be dooable.

Re: The Big Bang motor
OK who really wants a motor to feel like a big twin?? I think most of us bought these 4 bangers to get away from the big twin feel,at least i did, heck each time i get sucked into the marketing hype of how sweet these big twin motors go,i go out and get one, only to be completely dissapointed in the end,and run back to a good tripple or quad motor to get that sweet running and sounding motor back.sandy8657 said:Any Yamaha enthusiast who follows both the motorcycles and snowmobiles, know that Yamaha changed their 2008 R-1 motorcycle to a "Big Bang" motor for the 2009 model year. more power
I was told the other day that yamaha has a higher horsepower engine already built and sitting on the shelves waiting. They did not release it this year because of the economy. I was told it produces around 180 hp. He would not tell me about the chassis that it was going into because he wasnt sure on that. This a very reliable source and I trust his every word. When I went to yamaha training back in 2001 they told me then that they
had a 4 stroke motor already built for a sled but was waiting to release it because the general public was not ready for it. It is supose to be realeased this year. Lets keep our fingers crossed.
