What is the best used 4 stroke under $5,000?

Hmmm, what you haven't told us is your requirements other than the cost. Do you want to be first across the lake? Is fuel mileage important to you? Do you want a longer track 136" model or a 121" model?

You need to give us some more information because you should be able to find an 05 RX-1, 05 Rage, and an 05 Vector for under $5000.

Is there a ton of diff between an 05 RX-1 and an 06 Apex? Don't laugh, I'm a yamanoob. The Apex got a major suspension upgrade from 06 -> 07, right? Is it true that the early (03 or so) RX-1's had a poor suspension, but that by 05 they were very much improved? There seems to be a fairly large price diff between an RX-1 and Apex, but I would have no problem on an RX-1 if the suspension was OK. Was the RX-1 considered to be a "rider fwd" sled?

Opinions vary but here's mine. The 05 RX-1 was a huge jump in comfort over the 03 and 04's. The Mono shock was a bit soft on the 05's but overall I only bottomed Mine a handful of times that season. Plus the weight transfer of the 05's was awesome, as are all sleds with mono-shocks rear skids. As far as 'calibration' the 08 models with the mono-shock are said to be even better than anything from the 05-07 mono-shock line of sleds. Ergonomics is the biggest difference between the RX-1 Delta chassis vs. Apex chassis. My friend still has his 05 RX-1 and Its still a fun sled to ride. His RX-1 is still Fast and does a hell of alot better on fuel than the Fuel Injected Apex's. 2-3 mpg better in My experience. I used to see 18 MPG on My RX-1 and if My wife rode it she would get a real close to 20. Overall though the Apex line is just a more comfortable sled to ride IMO. But if you ask My buddy with the 05 RX-1 he'll say he likes the ergo's and ride of the RX-1 better. Again, opinions vary.

It's all apersonal preffence.
For me I would get a 06 rage with a bar riser and nytro seat.
A few little mods and you will be beating sttock rx1's and tie some apex's up to a 100.

Now...wouldn't all the same mods work on an RX too? And the 05 is cheaper to start with..leaving some room in the budget for the seat and riser...and filters...and clutching :). Either way you're going to win because they are both excellent sleds but I still say the value lays in the (05) RX.

Again, thanks to all for your input. I now have some serious thinking to do now. I just found out that my Viper with the rebuilt engine most likely has spun the water/oil pump crank drive gear. This means the motor has to come out and I will need to look for a crank. This is after I just had one of the crank bearing replaced and rebuilt the motor with all new OEM pistons and rings. This really hurts as I have spent all summer rebuilding the motor, completely rebuilding the skid (bushings, wheels, bearings, etc.), having all four shocks re-valved by Pioneer, built a custom seat riser, and polished lots of aluminum.

I do not have the time or energy to take the motor apart again. I want to ride.

So I am left with:

1) Having my dealer fix the motor $1,000 - $1,500 on top of the $1,300 I have spent so far.

2) Buy a used 05' RX1, or 06' Rage

3) Buy a new 06' Nytro or Apex

As far as my cash flow, it might make sense to have the dealer fix the motor, but this leaves me still with a sled that has 7,00 miles on it and that has all four original jack shaft bearings, and drive chain that could let go during first ride.

I ride mostly groomed trails with some off trail every now and then. I love the handling and power of my Viper and hoped the new shock valving would help on rougher trails. I have never rode a 4 stroke but planed to go there when I replaced my Viper. Which might be sooner than later. Oh, and the 05' black RX1 I found has already been sold. Bummer!

What to do? G.B.

It's all in what you want.i cancelled a pre order 05 rx1 and got a vector.I have had many miles on both and for trail riding i prefer the vector. It corners better and feels a lot lighter.

Again it's a personal prefereance. The vector is about the same performance as the viper but faster accelleration out of the hole.
