Who's done the battery relocation??

I got a question about the battery relocation mod. Who's done theirs as instructed on this site with the small, dry cell battery moved up inside the bulkhead? If you have, has it been a reliable mod? I wonder about using a dry cell battery that wasn't designed to be "quick charged" by an automotive type electrical system. Any regrets or bad experiences? Any fried charging systems, or burnt batteries? This looks like a great mod for little $$ that saves tons of weight off the front end. Sure seems like a good idea, but I don't see any manufacturers running this style battery. Gotta be a reason. BTW this is going in a RX1 shorty which I put about 1000 trail miles on per year. Worth the mod??? Thanks guys.

I did the battery relocate with a Powersonic 1270. The first Battery I put down there ended up getting damaged because I did not have it mounted down correctly (I just drilled 2 small holes and ran some zip ties...cheesy). Bought the 2nd battery for $18 locally and got a plate and some 4" carriage bolts and mounted it down good and snug and haven't had a problem since.

However, we rode on a very cold day (-15), camped in RV, and rode another very cold day and my RX needed a jump while my wife's stock Vector started up. Once it was warmed up the battery worked all day long without any problems.

I've been using the YTZ10S battery with no problem for the last two years!
Just 8 pounds 190 CCA! I will do the same for my Apex Mtn!

I haven't been able to get enough charge on my 1270 to start my vector. Perhaps a bad battery. Once jumped it runs fine but I can't shut if off for more than a few seconds. Haven't had time to see whats up...

I am using this same battery with the relocate in the belly pan area w/o any problems in over 2 years. I tried the powersonic befor the YTZ. The powersonic was OK for regular temps, but when the temp went below zero, it had a very hard time starting.

I've used the lightweight MPI battery for two seasons. It has an amazing number of CCA so starting when cold has never been a problem. What it lacks is capacity, so if you roll the sled and drain the carbs or run the sled out of gas, the battery can run down pretty far trying to crank the bowls full. I carry a nose syringe, now, that I stick on the fuel pump vacuum lines and maually fill the carbs when needed. I'm considering installing an electric fuel pump like the turbo/superchargers use to solve the problem. Anyone know what brand they use? Other than that the battery has worked flawlessly and saves ten lbs. With a very small bit of grinding it willl pass into the front bulkhead and fits snuggly with a strap. No damage problems yet. Only drawback is the price, $200+ . Still relatively cheap weght savings

I used a YTZ7S out of WR 450. Relocated it above right foot well. Also moved cdi to left foot well and voltage regulater to steering post bracket. Had to move some wires in main harness to relocte stuff. The YTZ7S is 4.8 lbs. Worked great last 2 years! Moved 15 lbs back 24 inches. Made front end much lighter, plus dont have to remove battery to get to oil filter.

lightweight battery

Here is battery kit I have made up to fit RX1 and Vector

 How much weight savings over the YTZ10S over the stock XT120ls? that is on the 05s, and the 04s YTXL120? I cant remember them exactly but I know that the 05s battery is a little lighter than my 04s are thanks for the help! ;)!

My air cond scale told me that the 03 battery weighted 14.450 lbs, same battery in the 04's. The 05 got the 14 series. Never weighted it, but the 10 series weighted in at 6.950 lbs, saves 6.8 lbs, and the bracket weights 2.5lbs. The ytz 10 is out of a R1 and the new 350 raptor, easy to get. Only 10 cca from the 05 battery, don't think the reserve is the same.

Was this done without having to get longer wires  and did you also move the brackets or drilled them out? Thanks :D

I have the YTZ 10 battery now, its sitting down in the front of the bulk head, fits really good. Does anybody have a pic of what there setup looks like for strapping it down. Buddies have made a battery box for there ytz 7 to sit in, then rivet it to the right foot well.
