I was pulling my sled apart yesterday to replace my track and found the bolt that screws into the drive shaft securing the collar, spring and journal against the reverse gear broken right off. Has anyone seen this? I have no idea how long its been broken but its snapped off inside the shaft quite a ways and is going to be a touchy extraction to say the least.

Ah, the infamous broken bolt. The links provided above will fill you in. Consensous is the bolt is ok broken inside the chaincase, but should be replaced with the updated bolt. Extraction isn't too bad with a good EZ out or left handed drill bit.

Right on, thanks. I have both tools at home so I'll giver hell tonight. If that doesn't work I'll have one of my boys do it in the machine shop hear at work. They will do "government work" anytime for a pizza every couple months. They always know when sled season is here based on the amount of these government type jobs I bring in Lol.

Get a spacer machined...buddy and I are both running one and both bolts were fine after 1000+ KM's.

X2 over 4000km's on spacer
Here's the dimensions
19.9mm OD, 4.90mm thick, with a hole through the middle to accomodate the 10mm bolt

OK, sounds good. Thanks again.

my bolt backed out and drilled its way through the chain case. i removed the bolt and ran it that way for over 1500mi with no issues. just a pita to reassemble.

I'll be checking mine this season when I do my track change, I'm kind of thinking that if it's broken, running w/out it is the way to go. Saw that one person has 13,000 km w/out the bolt with no issues.

but then again, a quick search on google came up with some threads where people made good points about why the bolt really should be there. Does anyone have any of the spacers for sale or know where something appropriate could be acquired? Also, saw Ulmer's write-up on reinstalling the driveshaft, one side has to be tightened before the other?

Can someone please explain the spacer? Where does it go?
Under the head of the bolt you are replacing?
How does the spacer fix the problem?
Just had my buddies apart for a track change last weekend and he had the busted bolt too we just replaced it with another bolt knowing it will probably break again.
If there is a better fix i would like to go that route.
Thanks

The spacer goes inside the cup the bolt passes through. There is almost 5mm of gap between the end of the driveshaft to the inside of the cup, which allows the shaft to apply a load that shears the bolt. The shim fills the void.

In my case I can see where the bolt head was in the process of doing the same thing. That would have been nice 300 miles from nowhere.
