Yamaha's new sled requirements for the "POWER MONGERS&a

I agree with KNAPP & would've written the same thing, but nobody listens to me because i'm obcessed with this sport & my friends think i'm crazy! Give me 50% of what KNAPP said & i'll be happy...P.S. Thank you KNAPP for explaining to TIGHTEN my track. I finally stopped loosing clips & actually gained on top...

I'm still trying to swallow the I want it lighter but add power steering. Maybe they could loose 30hp, put a single throttle body on it and swiss cheese the chassis and be like the xp.

It would only take about 10-15 more HP for the 1200 to be faster than the Apex. The XR chassis is very strong and well engineered. The Apex would need to lose about 100 lbs and completely redesign the chassis front to back to compete with the 1200. Now thats funny! ;):D

Dude, why do you keep posting here, when every post is a slam against Yamaha...

Dude, why do you keep posting here, when every post is a slam against Yamaha...

I keep posting here because I still own a 06 Apex and 08 Nytro. My Apex has 6500 trouble free miles on it and its been the most reliable sled I have ever owned. Everything I've posted has been based on what I own and is fact not fiction. When I say the Apex is heavy I don't say it to bash Yamaha I say it because the Apex is heavy. The 1200 Doo needs to prove its engine is as reliable as the Apex and then it will be perfect. The Apex and Nytro need to drop some weight, come out with better skis and figure out how Ski Doo's ride and handle so well then they will be perfect. I'm thinking Yamaha has a lot more work to do than Ski Doo does. :exc:

I agree the apex is heavy.. but why do you keep saying the nytro needs too loose weight.. That sled is super light for a 4 stroke..

They also sell after market skis.. so you can fix that for yamaha.. I have doo skis on my apex.. and love them..

Agreed, the Nytro and the 1200 are within a few lbs.

I dont mind about the skis, c&a skis are the way to go either way, i wish these sleds would have a little better mpg.

I have Doo pilot skis on both my Apex and the wifes Nytro and they make a huge improvement to both sleds. The Nytro is light compared to the Apex but don't fool yourself thinking the Nytro is only a few lbs more than the 1200. Unless you think 40 + lbs is "only a few lbs"

Just a question here and probably off topic...but the doo 1200 is rated at 10-15lbs lighter than the Nytro...that's dry..but the Doo has a larger gas tank so when they're wet wouldn't the Doo weigh that same or more?

Bottom line here is Yamaha needs to step to the plate soon and bring it all. Ski-Doo is looking good with the 1200. It will be my next new purchase if the HP doesn't go up and nothing changes for either mfgr. I'm hoping Yamaha does something before Ski-Doo ups the ante with the 1200. There is no doubt in my mind both companies are working at adding power to the four strokes. The problem here lies in the fact Yamaha tends to be to conservative rather than aggressive. I want a machine that is all there as a package. Even though the Cat was heavier it flew through the air like a sno-cross sled, it landed perfect every time it went airborne, it cranked thru the corners far better than my Yamaha. I got rid of it however due to its lack of straightline performance, poor build quality and reliability. Yamaha should be able to match the good qualities of the other brands and this would be the machine I'm looking for. It doesn't have to be the lightest on paper, I couldn't care less about that. This post is about ideas on how Yamaha can improve on what they have now. They have a great product but many items can be, and should be addressed at the factory level. I have been waiting for people to add things like "we could also use a better placed dimmer switch within reach of your thumb," or "perhaps Yamaha could also go back to a hinged hood instead of all the removable panels" or even, "how about a 14" track for the trail sled user for increased speed, MPG, and lightened weight". Lets not try to bash each other because one guy switched to a Ski-Doo or a Cat. Thats insane! This is how we share ideas. Believe it or not, some of the other companies actually have better equipment or features that are far and away superior the what we have now. That is the reason I started this post. To make Yamaha aware of the shortcomings we have compared to the other OEM's. I don't bleed blue, green or yellow. I prefer the Yamaha for the moment but would switch to another brand if it offered the features I was looking for in a machine in a heartbeat. Let's try to keep this directed towards ways Yamaha might improve their product for our enjoyment of the sport. Maybe, just maybe we'll see if they really do listen as long as we keep somewhat reasonable in out requests. Thanks to all those that have offered reasonable and constructive ideas. Keep the requests coming. Maybe Yamaha is watching? Maybe Yamaha will listen?

Ya I'm not sure where JDS gets 40+ lbs when you look that the specs of the XTX and the 1200 Gade and it's only a 20lbs differnce in dry weight. The gade has 10.5 gallon tank. When you fill them both up, who is going to be heavier..

Knapp, DOO would need to improve the hp of the 1200 to make the switch as well as the balance of the over all sled. Everyone I have talked to about the 1200 is that it is not as balanced as the Nytro (particularlly when jumping it), but it does ride and handle awesome... There is no doudbt that Yamaha needs to get these sleds to handle and ride alot better. It is their biggest weakness. I do agree that they are not the aggressive type OEM like DOO is... They make small increments and never really take a big swing at it.. The biggest swing I have seem them do in a few years was building the the RX1 and Nytro. The Apex was a small incrementel change from the RXI. Effective, but still a small change...

I don't go by any manufacturers dry weight ratings. Yamaha is way off with thier ratings. My 06 Apex was listed at 541 lbs and the real dry weight was closer to 585 lbs. My 1200 X pkg was rated at 509 by Doo and one of the mags weighed it at 500 lbs. My Wife's Nytro was rated at 521 but every real weight I have seen on the Nytro shorty is between 540-545 lbs dry.

So if your Doo1200 weighs 500, add 100 lbs for fuel ( 1 gallon weighs roughly 10lbs ) and you're at 600lbs....a fully fueled and trail ready Nytro is 592lbs ( according to SnowSports Mag ) Guess your Doo is heavy eh? I'll also mention that the same issue weighed the GSX 1200 at 531 dry...sheesh those Doo are over weight compared to a Nytro
