.004" run out clutch end of jackshaft

out of curiosity, what're you calling hot and what's considered normal? Infrared gun I presume?
 
My Apex clutches would barely get warm after 5 or more miles at 90 plus mph. The same rr grade the 1100 zuk cat blew a belt and had to remove secondary to remove strings etc. Couldn't even hang onto the clutch, had to drop it in the snow before working on it. My SW I can barely keep my fingers on the clutches riding average speeds to fast, I call the SW hot and the 1100 cat smoking hot, the Apex was stupid cool.
 
If I could ride from the house right now for a good 50+ mile ride I'd block off/isolate the area behind the secondary, heck gorilla tape the crap out of it for a try? Maybe the clutches are drawing hot air from the back of the motor/manifold area. There's been an exhaust leak here on the forums which could explain why some are worse than others. I know my left foot stays warm which it should not. Barely any clutch venting on an Apex, why did it work so well? Was it the button clutch with wimpy springs or being in a different compartment from hot exhaust parts etc? I've ran a low mile Apex primary on my SW and it's still hot, but it is quieter.
 
I have been watching this, and thought of snow dust getting on clutches. The belley pan is not sealed very good to the frame
 
Hold a light under and around the clutch area. I even sealed up the back side of the caliper because there was traces of water or moisture in the belt dust. Way better after sealing the gaps with rtv.
 
You cannot compare this engine to an apex....and this clutch already floats once rolling.

Apex was the smoothest engine ever put into a sled. It also had a reduction shaft.

These triples are harder on clutches then any other engines, 4tec guys know this. Im not so sure belt life will ever be what it was on apex engines with these triples having odd harmonics, even if HP was closer to apex.

I sometimes wonder if much of this started when YAM made the switch to the splined output shaft(so they could use same engine on many diff powersports) that may or may not cause the noisy clutches, and does this all attribute to some sort of heat increase in the belt/primary over the apex days, where those belts never had any heat on them.

What really sucks is, after two seasons now pretty much....NO ONE has any conclusive evidence of an issue, or cure. Something I dont like to hear.

I'm sure its not a hp thing because running 3/4 plus throttle on the apex for miles and miles is harder on a belt (using more hp moving that heavier sled) than just tooling around on an average trail 30-60 mph using 1/4 throttle on a SW, tune or no tune. I was only trying to compare the environment the clutches are in. Theres a heat source somewhere, the clutching or ? Nobody has found a cure all yet and no one has tried to block any of the exhaust area heat. I see a project thats worth a try. I do agree about the 3 cyl facts and them living a rough life Dan.

Hot to me is too hot to keep my hand on it. Hot to me is also when there's heat in the clutches after riding only a mile when everything was cold to start.

I spent an hour 1 night in the dark with a flashlight sealing up the bellypan.
 
Still don’t like the run out that’s horrible imo. You said you indexed the clutch and cut that runout in half? Wow I’m wondering if that sled was miss handled in production and something hit the secondary slightly bending the jackshaft and clutch? Or maybe during transport and body panels fixed? I know of a guy who messed up his primary bumping into a tree and it did the same thing, blew one belt after another until he had a new clutch and straightened the crank.
 
Soupy, this is Eric DW, Bakker's buddy from way back. I'll let you run my secondary if you let me try some of your aftermarket clutch parts. have had zero belt issues. Be back from the up late tomorrow night.
