I rode about 90 miles yesterday... Before we stopped for lunch, my sled started making a thumping noise. I inspected while stopped and replaced the belt, which had a few chunks missing. I rode the last 30 miles or so pretty slow (25-30 mph) trying to break in the new belt. It ran fine but squealed every time I stopped, and it wanted to creep forward without the brake applied. Guessing the extra width of the new belt was grabbing the sheaves. I used a Gates belt. Don't have the part number on me right now.
I've read that may need to remove the shims on the back of the secondary, which makes sense, but this sled has just under 1,000 miles ( bought it in January with 700. Now about 980). This seems a little premature to me. Is this normal?
Also, I still heard a couple " thumps" coming from underneath. Couldn't inspect the track well on site because it was packed with snow. I'll check it out later.

Any time you install a new belt, you may have to adjust the shims on the backside of the secondary. Makes absolutely no difference how many miles are on the sled. Two different belts will have two different widths and lengths (circumference) which requires adjusting the washers to set the belt tension properly.

Ulmer is correct, or you do what I do and just stab the gas at every possible moment and wear it down faster haha. Boom no adjustment needed after a few hundred miles.

So I guess if you just stayed with using Yamaha belts vs another brand you should not have this issue? Or just stay with whatever brand belt you were using? I would think they should all be the same size.

I plan to adjust the clutch this week, but ordered two OEM belts. They won't be here until next week though, and I'm planning on going riding again this weekend. So I guess if you just stayed with using Yamaha belts vs another brand you should not have this issue? No they are different and wear. If you adjust the washers with a new belt, you could just replace the belt at intervals and never have to adjust it again. However they last for nearly ever and a simple 5 mins change and you can save $100 seems worth it to me. Just keep the washers in a baggy if you ever get a new one. I could make a vid on this if people were that confused. Its super simple. So I guess if you just stayed with using Yamaha belts vs another brand you should not have this issue?
