Last weekend I blew a belt on a ride on Tug Hill on my '09 XTX. Apparently on the 09's, Yamaha added an aluminum plate underneath the clutch along the bottom to help deflect water, because some guys complained with the 08 Nytros that their left foot was getting wet as the clutch threw melted snow around. Well, when the belt blew it grabbed this aluminum plate and crumpled it up like paper. The real problem was, it stuck in the secondary and scraped the hell out of the inside of my outer sheath on the clutch! Now I'm having an expensive repair done to replace the outer sheath! The dealer said mine was the 2nd he'd seen in 2 DAYS with exactly the same issue!!!

Yamaha should cover this under warranty since it was due to poor design. A blown belt should not cause a clutch replacement! I bet Yamaha does nothing for me though, saying they do not warranty damage due to blown belts. TAKE MY ADVICE: REMOVE THIS STUPID ALUMINUM PLATE BEFORE YOU BLOW A BELT! THE DEALER DOING THE REPAIR HAS RECOMMENDED THE SAME THING!

That's interesting.

I have a complete secondary off my 09 XTX that I could sell you, I replaced mine with a Team Tied Secondary. I think maybe I'll remove that plate as well...... :o|

How many miles on your belt before it let go? There was a post on here earlier about people blowing belts after 100 miles. Are you one of those?

Rode the Tug Hill this past weekend too, and can't help to wonder if I'm gonna be one of these belt victims. My last Yamaha was awesome, and gave me zero grief. Almost feel like I'm waiting for the shoe to drop.

What dealer is are you talking about that has seen this issue on another sled? At least your dealer might be able to go to bat for you on this design flaw when two of you guys are experiencing the same thing. :o|

I wonderd about that dumb plate the other day when I had the side panel off. It's not held down very well. Too thin?
I never had a wet foot on my 08 from that spot anyway.
My legs get wet from ice / water coming over the top of tunnel.

I had about 1900 miles on the belt. The dealer is Mike's in Rome NY and he went to bat for me with Yamaha pretty well. I just hung up with him, and he got them to cover the cost of the clutch itself but not the labor or shipping. I guess it could be worse. The part was over $270.

So, you're not getting Yamaha to cover the cost of a new dry foot plate?

I should! Great thought! The sad part is it was probably 2 guys who whined about a wet left foot, so Yamaha added the stupid thing to begin with!

Not two people thats for sure in 08 when it came out there were numerous threads here about that issue, me included. Do a search for wet left boot on here and see what comes up. From duct tape to caulking it was tried until that plate came out for 20 bucks. So they cant figure every possible scenario with a 20 dollar plate, it keeps a few thousand feet dry versus 2 so far clutch replacements which they dont even have to cover b/c you didnt get the extended warranty. I'll take my plate so far.

there are two plates...one that attaches to the footwell and one under the clutches...the one attached to the footwell is for the wet left foot...the one underneath I thought was just a belt guard..

2 clutches that you know of. There is no way a blown belt should cause this damage, and there are other "$20" fixes that could have prevented this. I have the bottom plate now removed, so if my foot gets too wet I'll let you know.

Um you needed to replace that belt. I agree a blown belt shouldn't result in damage to your clutches. That said it's your responsibility to make sure your belt is in good condition

Really? I ran over 4,000 miles on my Apex with no blown belt. My Vector ran over 3,500 miles with no issue. My buddie's 08 Nytro has 5,500 miles on the original belt. And my dealer inspected the belt at the end of last year when I had it serviced and saw no issues (less than 100 miles ago). So I should have changed it huh? After 1,900 miles?

Every sled is different every belt is different. Just because one belt goes X number of miles doesn't mean another will do the same!! There is a reason it blew. I replace my belts ever 1000 miles. It's 50.00 and I have piece of mind.

I agree with Dirk. to each his own though. I change every 1000 to 1500 miles. never had a belt blow and use the old belt as the new spare. I have never seen a belt go more that 3000 but maybe its the way me and my freinds ride???

I'm no expert but changing the belt before 1900-miles would have made more sense than after. For what it's worth, I am in the habbit of putting a new belt on at the start of the season and moving the old one to a back-up position. Avoiding such problems is worth 60-dollars to me.

Just FYI, when a post comes across as kinda pissy the postee tends to get dumped on. Otherwise, it's all fun-n-games.
