Has the grade of oil for the sidewinders changed? My manual says it requires 0W30 and the dealer only has 0W40 and insists thats what it takes.

2020 service manual says 0W-30.

Edit: so does my '19 service manual.

0 40 or 0 30 all good !!!
I ran both no issues in all my Yamaha engines over the years!!

So does this mean 0W20 is even better?
I ran 0-20 redline in my Apex for years. It ran great and never any problems. Not so sure about running it in a turbo Sidewinder engine though. Most turbo auto manufacturers use 5-30 or 0-40 for their higher film strength. My Ford eco boost truck specs 5-30 and not 0-20 like the non turbo engines.

Most auto manufactures running 0w20 in a turbo (VW for example) are doing it pretty much to reduce their fleet fuel economy stats. The risk vs. reward is too great IMHO for use in a turbo'd sled.

Yes it has per Yamaha dealers.
On my 2017 they recommended 0W30 semi syn for the first 2 years. Then they recommended 0W40 full syn for the following 2 years. I use Yamalube, but many use other Brands and claim that their choices are much better oils, when comparing oil properties, and that simply put, a thinner oil viscosity provides for easier turning motors for a small hp increase. So, up to you!

My service manual says 0W30 and yamaha customer service said 0W30 semi synthetic last year so why are they pushing us on the 40 weight now is it because they dont have any 30 weight now and trying to sell what they have?

0-40w full synthetic will out perform 0-30 semi syn all day long in terms of protection.

I’m not looking to gain .452 horsepower, I want engine protection.

Lots of TY threads on oil. Just search 'em up and read for a week or two.

We can't confuse viscosity with protection (higher viscosity doesn't necessarily mean better lubrication/protection OR lower viscosity doesn't necessarily mean poorer lubrication/protection). It's all about the engineering of the molecules and the additive package. Tons of stuff on internet too. Could read for months.

Ya i went though all those posts last year and decided to run what the manual says for the 20 year warranty, now the dealers are saying they dont make 0W30 any more

Same here I read for hours on this forum re oil. Finally settled on Mobil 1 0W-30 Racing Oil ("For Track Use Only") lol. Figured if it was good enough for Nascar engines, should be good enough twice a season in my SW. Partzilla shows Yamalube 0W-30 in stock. I've used them a couple of times for quad parts. Fast shipping, good prices, no complaints yet.
