Last year I purchased a zx2 skid. Right now it has the 121 ripsaw, but I have the hardware to extend to 136". I've looked through this website and it seems that the ripsaw suxs in loose snow. The cobra has great reviews. Having said that, there is an abundance of used 136" ripsaw tracks for sale in the $250ish range. I could proly afford to upgrade my pilots to simmons powder if I stick with a used ripsaw.

Soo my question is...are the ripsaws really that bad in loose snow? Is there anything I can do to make it a better track in loose snow? I spend approx 80% trail/20%off trail. However, when it snows in Northern NB it can be almost impossible to get anywhere for days.

I'm guessing that there is going to be a resounding no to the ripsaw, but I thought I'd better be sure. Cash is tight these days. Any advice would be appreciated...

The ripsaw is not good off trail because the spacing on the lugs is too close and it can't 'grab' the snow the sled over powers it and it trenches. When looking for a better track look at the spacing between the lugs the larger the space the more snow it can 'grab' and use as traction vs trenching. The predator 6 pitch is probably the best at this.

For a analogy picture yourself on a plastic sled in 6 ft of powder and your going to try and row yourself forward if you use your hands you likely dig in and not move, if you use a paddle you may actually grab enough snow to get traction and move forward.

On the opposite the more lugs you have the better on trail it is, which is why the ripsaw is the favorite trail track.

Thanks the info kinger. Sounds like I would notice a sig. diff. There is soo much info out there now.

closed window??

I was also wondering about closed window tracks. Late season runs are hard on hyfax because the trails get extremely hard in the evening when temps go down.

Would a fully clipped track allow more snow in for lube on hyfax.

Would it be OK to drill holes in the closed window to let snow in?

I to am thinking about changing my 06 Nytro from a 121 to a 136. that would be great if a could get a good used ripsaw, to save money. Any info on kits to change from 121 - 136 would help.
