It will. Surprised me also first time I saw that.I didn't think it will even crank with the kill off?

The Viper will crank with the kill switch off but won't start..... unlike the previous Yamaha chassis sleds.

Maybe the kill switch is the problem is it in the on position.

For what it's worth, I have a 16 xtx , new to me last December. Ran a season with zero starting issues. Last week has weird hard starting issues for the first time. 1/3 tank of fuel from March sitting in it. Once it was started it ran fine for the zip down the road, but decided to add a 1/2 can of seafoam and topped it up with a ethanol free 91. Rest of last weekend no starting issues at all and ran awesome.

So, my 2016 has always started fine, but now either starts hard, or won't start at all in the cold. I changed out the old gas, and replaced it with new non-ethanol gas, and changed the plugs. It was starting hard, and at first I thought it might be a bad battery because it would start using a battery pack to boost the battery. I bought a new battery and installed it. Then the other morning when it was @ 10 degrees (F), it would not start at all, even boosted with the battery pack. (Yes the relays were fine and I could hear the fuel pump.) Once it does start, it runs like a clock, and warm/hot starts are not a problem, it is just the cold.
The sled has 5,400 miles on it, and the dealer says it is a little early, but that it is most likely the valves needing adjustment. Any thoughts? I know that having the dealer do the valves is going to be expensive!

It appears to be. It starts with a number that is consistent with the external temperature, and when it warms up, the display comes up to temperature. Is coolant temp sensor working right?

Try to start with while applying presure to the throttle lightly.
Not so much as to give it gas only to activate the sensor.
It could be your throttle position sensor. They can be touchy.

I bought a 14 viper last season and I had the same issue. It was a tough start and the sled was new. I was confused as well. But as I ran it more and more it started better and better. I think the sled just needed to be run as I haven’t changed anything and it went from starting in 15 seconds to starting in 1-2.2014 yamaha viper xtx, 3900 miles. we were told the sled had all updates done. sled cranks and cranks for 15+ seconds and sometimes doesn't start at all. sled sits in heated garage. sleds new to us for this season. I had a 15 and started no issue like 2 seconds. this cant be normal im going nuts here. sled now has new plus and new battery. please any help before i sell this thing.

my 2020 is doing the same thing ran great when I pulled it out in November and rode it in the field for a half day then after that it sat for a week or so while I was doing my yearly maintenance went to crank it after I changed oil it just cranked over and never popped off thought maybe battery was bad so I hooked my charger up to give it a little boost still took awhile to start I got a new battery to rule that out but had the same issue I then changed my plugs got it to start but after letting it turn over 4 times at 6-7 seconds a time I let it sit for a couple more days now the thing won't even think about starting I would have drove it around the last time it decided to start to maybe clear it out a little but clutches are sent out to get machined so I just let it idle till coolant temp reached 190 I have checked fuses relays every thing I can think of electrical wise I'm going to dump the tank tomorrow and throw another new set of plugs in if I can't get it to run after I do this I'm taking to my dealer since I have another year of warranty

It sounds exactly like what happened with my 2016 XTX. It was having a hard time starting when cold, but once it started, it ran fine, and would start up fine once it was warm. I drained the gas and put in fresh gas, but that didn't seem to help, so I put in new plugs (actually the dealer did) and that did not help at all. I took it back to the dealer who at first thought the valves needed adjustment, but they were all within spec. As a last resort, he replaced the injectors, and now it starts up fine. It does seem to crank over a few seconds longer than it used to, but it starts.
I don't know whether old gas would clog the injectors? I used Seafoam in the gas for summer storage. I have a friend who claims it is bad to use Seafoam for storage because it breaks down all the dirt in the tank and ends up putting it through the fuel system, clogging everything up. Maybe he is right?

I let my sled sit over the spring/summer with a little less than a half tank but filled it in November I also put half a bottle of heat in the tank after this issue started but that didn't help I'm just gonna hope for the best when I drain the tank and put another new set of plugs in dealer said a lot of parts are on back order hate to have my sled sit at the shop for who knows how longIt sounds exactly like what happened with my 2016 XTX. I bought my sled last month and it had been sitting for a while. It had this exact same issue. I emptied the gas & replaced the plugs. Put new gas in & Sea Foam and now it starts fine. Also, I found it easier to remove the gas tank to replace the pugs. Since I had to empty the gas anyway. Not sure if that's the normal process or not but I found it the best route.
