16-17 Rear Shock Info

Can you tell me why when Yamaha has recognized that the shock selection that they installed on the 16-17 models Apex and vectors was a mistake and now is wanting customers that paid big money for there 16s which has the exact same skid as the 17s are pushing them to purchase a upgraded shock that they are supplying for free on the 17s? and of course you are all for it because you get to sell it to them, also could you direct me to the page on the Fox site where this new upgraded shock is? sense Yamaha has worked so hard with fox to develop this top of the line upgraded shock.

Well I don't think the shock selection on the 2016-2017 Apex/Vectors was really as you call it a mistake on all those units - at the time those units were produced it was the only shock that was developed to work in that rear suspension period - there were no other options - heck that same style shock as the 2016-2017 Apex/Vectors is the same style shock spec'd out to be used in the recently released 2018 Vector model. As far as Apex owners go - sure you can debate till you can't take it anymore whether or not they should put that newly designed shock in both the 2016 and 2017 models for free - but they had to draw the line somewhere and that line was pretty clear to me when they spelled it out in the letter to the dealers. Also nobody is pushing anybody to purchase anything - for owners of 2016-2017 Vectors and 2016 Apex models Yamaha has released the newly designed shock as an accessory and has released a bulletin to the dealers notifying them of its availability and part number to order if owners of those sleds are looking for a more sophisticated shock with much more adjustability than the stock shock. Prior to this there was no part number or anyway for anyone to order or get that shock other than the ones that were auto shipped to dealers to put in the 2017 Apex models.

In regards to the Fox site I don't believe you will ever find that shock on their site directly much like you haven't ever been able to find the Fox Megafloat used stock in the 2011-2015 Apex SE monoshock models on their site. I believe when they work directly with a manufacture like Yamaha to develop a shock directly for an application they do an exclusive deal to only offer it through that manufacturer.

I guess my frustrations didn't come through on that last text to you I just don't understand why they can't replace that shock with a coil over shock that has some adjustability rather than another airshock In the end I guess we just have to figure it out for ourselves I don't have much faith in the upgraded air shocks I know you dealers are caught between a rock and a hard place thanks for all the help and info though

No worries 1320 - I believe they have been working specifically with air shocks for this application as with the single shock style rear suspensions be it the Mono-Shock that was used from 05-15 in Apex/Vector/RX-1 or the newer Single-Shot skid used in 2016-and up Apex/Vector the biggest issue they have is that when they use a conventional shock that has a spring and valving to give good stutter bump ride quality they run into the issue that when hitting a big G-out style bump that takes the suspension deep into its stroke from both directions (front and rear arm) they can't slow down the movement fast enough late in the stroke that when it runs out of travel it give a very harsh bottom out leading to bone-jarring bottoming and broken suspension arms which was common on earlier mono-shock skids. When using an air shock it is easier to control that bottoming as when your compressing air instead of a spring when you get deep in the stroke in those situations the air pressure continues to ramp up providing a much less harsh bottoming feeling. Hope this helps understand why they have been working with the air shocks.

Tell me if this post through unspoken suggestions is not "sneaky advertisement" LOL
Not sure I even want to reply to this after all the sensitive and emotional damaging and heart breaking stuff...lol But hey we are an advertiser so we should have every right to post info here but honestly I only posted that information here for forum users to know as it saves me from replying to multiple emails and phone calls wondering if this shock was available and for how much.

And I posted it so owners were informed of options. That was a really out of line comment 20/80! Port and I are only trying to help. Another reason I posted the spec and setup sheet really impressed me leaving a nostalgic feeling of WOW well done from Japan! This new shock and the linked front setup on the 18's surely should in very least Excite every potential Apex owner. Me included. I remember watching Doug Henry sailing through 4-5ft whoops on his Mono shock sled. So we all know Yamaha Japan can easily make a suspension that rocks. Maybe this is it?

Does any one remember the product video of the single shot. They were saying (just plain works). I took them for there work and bought a 16 apex and believed that until I drove it.

Hope the upgraded shock makes up for the harsh ride of the stock shock of the 16-17, those that have made the upgrade already seemed pleased, I wonder if the upgraded shock comes with a warranty or is it they supply the upgrade and your on your own type of deal.

I know Fox warranties for 1 year even OEM shocks. Never checked to see if that warranty includes revalve service but I suspect it may.

We must all sound like a bunch of cranky old ladies haha , I decided to go with stage 4 elka and sled rides so nice now very easy to adjust on trail to fine tune ride. I tried that air shock less air , more air , lost air ,harsh ride or too soft . thanks for info again

Did you happen to try the updated shock before going with Elka to compare the two

I would say the elka has to be better. The upgraded shock is worlds better for ride at lower speeds. the old shock was only good if you wanted to drive like and idiot 75 mph over rough trails. The area I believe the elka would be better is in the high speed comp damping, this shock seems to hit bottom fast on those square bumps, no matter what comp setting or recommended air pressure. This only really happens a few times a ride.
