2009 Yamaha Nytro Subframe?

YamaMTX said:
I was just wondering if people are having any problems with the 2009 subframes like they did in 2008?

What is the best way to tell if it is tweaked just a little?

I am wondering all of this because I am trying to decide if need to extend the warranty. I would rather not because with in a year or so it will be heavely modded to the point they probably wouldn't cover much anyways.

I did search some but didn't find what I was looking for. Any info is appreciated!

I would'nt bother with the warranty,,for the most part they won't warranty it anyhow,,,my riding buddy really buggered his sub frame and a-arms last year..It was discusting how easily it happened. He was doing less that 10 mph and the spindlle while his steering was turned hooked a small stump under the snow!! But i still love my nitro,,guess with all thats gettn don to it,,I might as well throw a chromolley sub frame on it to and be done with it!!!! :die

So no chance it could be warrantied? I thought some had it done. Where would you get a subframe that this isn't a problem? a chromolley one.

I HAVE HEARD OF GUYS GETTING WARRANTY BUT ONLY ON HERE,,IN THE REAL WORLD I KNOW QUITE A FEW WHO DID'NT,,DIAMOND S SELLS A CHROMOLY ONE,,NOT CHEAP THO OF COURSE!! ,,I THINK U SHOULD GET THE MILES OUT OF YOUR STOCK ONE AND WORRY ABOUT IT WHEN IT HAPPENS,,THATS MY INTENTION,,I GOT A SMALL TWEEK,,BUT I CAN LIVE WITH IT AT THIS POINT ;)!

i have an 08 nytro mtx and i have run over quite a few trees etc.. I have 0 problems with mine. Fingers crossed./knocking on wood LOL. I am sure it is only a matter of time though.

If it does happen, it will most likely occur when only one side will catch, either by a direct impact or something as simple as snagging a railway track with your ski. It'll be more maddening if it happens at less than 5mph.

Pretty sure mine is slightly tweaked and don't remember bumping into anything. I have been riding Polaris for around twenty years and never had a problem like this. Don't get me wrong I love my Nytro. Just come on Yamaha Man up!

Polaris has always had one complete frame though... this new front end geometry on these sleds and others will always fold when impact occurs.... even with reinforcement its going to get tweaked one way or another if you hit anything. Think of it as a roll cage. Nascar drivers get in accidents, flip over and over... they get out and their car is mangled and their roll cages are tweaked but intact. You beef up the sub-frame and it will take the small hits better, but if you take a bigger hit its going to damage the motor mounts or the motor itself. I remember years ago when they started building cars so they would collapse. This is kind of the same idea. Its a bad design if you ask me, but with sled prices climbing maybe its good if you hit something large you only have to replace the front end... not have a total loss. Good for business too if your going through a ruff patch and need to drum up service for the dwindling number of dealers left in the game. I have seen many front end impacts on these sleds, and in 08 it was bad... little hits knocked them out. They beefed them up to an extent for 09 and still a hit just right and you will be dealing with a bent frame. I bent my SE frame with 100 miles on it. Bumped a rock doing 20 or so on the front bumper support. It tweeked the sub frame pretty good, but after adjusting some rods it was like the day I bought it. A friend and I replaced out the sub-frame this summer in about 3 hours. The old sleds never had this problem because of the block frames... use tubing in any application and I guarantee you it can take a hit but will almost always come out a little tweaked.

PS: A friend had a small tweak, (noticed his shocks were not center) we pulled off the arms and put a metal block into the sub frame arm mounts and bent them back. You couldn't even see the amount it had moved but when we put everything back together it was centered again.

Ha ha I thought I was good too, two seasons no issues (hit LOTS of trees). Hit a small rock, actually just the carbides caught and "tweak" there goes my perfect front end. 1/2 inch out on upper arm now......

That is fine and dandy about the roll cage theory and I agree with it all, also in the car world a roll cage is the strongest most rigid frame you can get with no body twist! So Why Yamaha? I don't want to feel like, when I'm going down a trail with my buddies and you see a snow bank to jump I have to tell them nope I want to baby my sled I am not going to do what you can do with no problems. That is a bunch of crap besides you will be laughed at! Like I said I have been riding for twenty years and haven't bent something so easy and I really take care of my stuff. So any ideas to solve the problem?

I suppose flotation plates and other plates may help glance your sled off an object but they just aren't tweak proof. I think a full front end float plate would be your best bet. Something one piece covering under body and arms. Let me know if you find anything... closest thing I have seen is the oem float plate. Never could justify the cost but now that I have an mtx to the arsenal I will prob put one on in hopes of avoiding the hidden rocks and stumps.

The Flotation plate is a good protection device. The problem is if your skis hit a bump uneven or something harder it can bend.

Does your 09 RTX have the same "updated" subframe as the 09 XTX?

Yes it does, and now I see Yamaha has updated the subframes on the 2010s. That's 3 different subframes for the same sled over 3 model years. By the time Yamaha gets the subframe strengthened/designed like it should been (for a rough trail sled), it'll be time to roll out a whole new model.
