2010 AK sled projects

Got my post back in and my old riser and bars on. For being about my umpteenth steering setup, this one feels perfect. The bars are rolled back even further right where they should be, but because the post is more vertical the bars still don't dip nearly as much as stock when turning. Cannot wait to ride it now.

The current T-top isn't very attractive but I'll address that later.

A sign of our epic snow year :(

My track is shot anyways so I cut it down to 2"

Then added over 200 screws, should hook up a little better now.

Sad it has came to this, this year but I figured why not since I wont be running this track next year. Plus with snow this poor I will probably run a couple hill climbs where the stiffer lugs and traction screws will help.

Got my Mill fixed today so now I can finish my header flex's

Using a boring bar to put the 1.5" hole in for the header pipe to be welded. All 3 new flanges are still bolted together for the whole process of making them.

mocked up with the pipe in place, I still need to round the edges on the flanges. I came up with a idea of how to round the outer two on the lathe but then I'll finish it up with a belt sander.

cleaning up the edges on the pipes to be welded in.

Hopefully I will get time tomorrow to pull my header and get it all welded up but we'll see.

With our poor snow I'm looking forward to getting a 2 month earlier start on the 2011 summer build. I've got a lot of ideas so hopefully this will be a good summer. But of course I would rather we get some snow.

1/4" Malco sheet metal screws, ;)! priceless

exactly!

Even though there were reports of really good snow today I took the day off to get some stuff done and instead I spent the whole day playing with my sled. I got pictures but I messed up and didn't have the memory card in my camera so I have to find the cable to get them off there.

Got my exhaust flanges welded on then faced them on the lathe to make sure the heat didn't warp them and the pipes were coming off perfectly straight. I'm sure I wouldn't have had to do that but since I'm trying to learn how to use the lathe I use it for anything I can come up with. Then I got the header pulled and cut off, tacked it all together. I got in kinda a rush so I decided to just pull off that project and finish it on a fresh mind. So I switched gears into a different project. I decided I wanted purple wheels ;)

Got a ton of stuff done today too bad I didn't get anything done I needed to. :jump:

Tomorrow I'll weld up my header and make some new billet drop brackets.

Why the old Poo skid?

Its actually a old Holz poo skid. I picked it up for next to nothing when I was in the lower 48. The main reason is probably just that I got bored. I have just not been very happy with the floats performance so I figured I would give it a try. It had the crappy throw away front shock so I put in my stiffened up fox from my cat skid.

This skid does a couple things I like better but we'll see how it rides. With smaller rear wheels I don't have my exhaust clearance issues anymore so I can mount it higher and it has about 2" more travel than my cat skid did. But because the old poo's sat so low in the front the rail profile is really shallow so I actually added a set of bogies up at the tips. I'm curious to see how this thing works. Mounting it was easy, I just have to make some simple mounts for the rear since the center to center spacing is about 3 inches shorter.

I hear ya. If I don't like the different valving I just got then I'll probably end up getting the Ohlins shock next year. Zuggers is selling them for $400 as a direct replacement to the Cat float.

Yeah the float is just so mushy, like it doesn't have the force to lift the sled back up when compressed. The coil over would be sweet to try and the price is good.

One think I like is the holz uses a 18 1/2" shock vs the 16 on the float so that means the ratio's of spring travel to suspension travel are greater thus a lighter spring will do the same amount of force as a stiffer one in the cat skid. I'm sure this can be overcome with a conventional spring but I just don't think the float has what it takes. I also find it funny how old this skid is and now 3 of the 4 brands are using the same design.

How the cat float skid feels really makes me wonder how well the nextec skid would work using a single float for the whole skid.
