2010 AK sled projects

Hey Boys your work is super!!!

Me I'm fighting with carbon fibers ... going step by step try to learning the right way to obtain perfect molding and other tons of secrets.

But first items and tests are simply exciting ;)!

Pictures cooming soon

got a little work done on my running boards tonight, The bar spacing is not set yet just stuck them in there to get the idea.

Got all the running board bars for one side cut last night, It took two hours with the notcher and walking back and forth to the grinder to get them too all fit perfect. just have to drill all the riv nut holes now and they are ready to be welded in

Trying to figure out the angle's on the rear to make it the strongest I know the best would be to tie it all the way up top. I need to spend some more time playing with options tonight. Once I get those two bars done than the one side will be ready to weld and the other is about 1/2 done and should go faster.

Took a break from working on the rear bumper to mount the gas tank and trim the plastic.

Got the rear bumper done

Finished all the plastic trimming and with a little 3M 1300 and marine velcro everything fits really tight. It came out better than I was expecting.

I literally spent two days trying to figure out how to make my seat frame and finally got a plan together. Started by trimming the back of the gas tank flat.
IMG_0940.jpg

Made a plate for the forward mounts to weld to, it also covers the opening in the gas tank so snow can't get in.

That's where I'm currently at but I should be done tomorrow. I couldn't order 5052 tube anywhere so I was forced to anneal the 6061 I ordered which was a lot easier than I thought. I don't have an O/A setup but I read you can put permanent marker all around the area you want to bend and use a propane torch and heat it until the marker burns off. I'm a plumber and have a big propane tank and #5 torch tip and it actually worked really well and only took a couple minutes. I didn't try past 90* but it bent just fine. (I only annealed the bent area, the rest of the marks are from twisting it through the die)

The seat has taken a lot longer than I thought it would, so here's a bunch of pics of my entire day instead. Time for a :beer break.

Rear mounts cut out and in place.
IMG_0966.jpg

Rear frame support bent and tacked.
IMG_0969.jpg

I was trying to keep the same angle as the exhaust bracket(for looks) and got pretty dang close.
IMG_0972.jpg

Main frame rails bent and in place.
IMG_0973.jpg

Brace at the front.
IMG_0979.jpg

Another brace in the rear. I put it tight against the plastic ridge in the seat base to help ensure a tight fit.
IMG_0982.jpg

Added a tab that goes in the slot in the seat to keep the front held down. This way I only have to bolt the rear.
IMG_0990.jpg

This is where I'm currently at. The end of the frame rails might look off but it's because the ends were bent up about 10* so I'd hit the rear support dead center.
IMG_0991.jpg

Time to get beer and head back out to the garage.

Got the front supports done and welded the frame. I'm still fairly new to TIG welding, but with all the odd angles and tight spots this project really helped me improve a lot.
IMG_1010.jpg

Another one with the seat on. Just have to make the rear bolt tabs for the seat, weld in an exhaust hanger, and add a little bracing. I'll weigh it once I'm all done but it's only about a pound right now.

Project is looking good! Sticking with the dark green again this year or going with something different? Are you going to weigh it when your done?

Looking great Caleb!!!! Yeah welding tubing is a challenge for sure with my tunnel Im thinking I will have plenty of practice by the time im done.

I'll weigh it when I'm 100% done. It will be a different color, just not sure which one yet.

Practiced welding .083 to 3/16 before doing it on the seat frame.

Exhaust hanger tacked in place. I wish I had a waterjet. Skill saw, jig saw, and hand file takes too long, took me about 5 hours to make the hanger, lol.
