2010 AK sled projects

My dad is a longtime aircraft mechanic/pilot with a lot of resources in the aviation industry. It's helped me tremendously over the years.

I just got back from my week of work out of town so it's time to get working on the sled. I received my 7-piece dimple die kit

And of course had to try it out

Real progress in the next few days. Thanks for all the positive comments!

Turns out you can't bend 6061 tube, it just tears in half at about 15-20 degrees. Obviously that scrapped the aluminum bumper idea so I bent it out of 1" .065 4130 which I'm sure is better anyway. The tube bender is a beast, but man does it work good. I'm sure I'll be looking for reasons to use it :D

5052 aluminum will bend/form with a lot better results than the 6061. Keep up the awesome work.

;)!

I sold half the 6061 and will be ordering 5052 this week. I had some scrap left over from making my cooler tubes and it bent just fine.

too bad you guys arent over here...awesome...real craftsman like work

Ya really, lot's of cool work you guys have into those sleds. Crazy-cool stuff actually. Very out of the box thought processes to improve looks and performance.

If Yamaha was smart, they'd consult with people like your selves on how to build better products!

;)! ;)! ;)!

How does this dimple die kit work?? Do you drill the holes first and then use this tool or does it create the hole in the same process?

Thanks

Nice sled and build by the way ;)!

Holes first, dies next...

well after a summer of vacations, having company and trying stupid projects that have got me nowhere I finally got some good headway done on the sled.

Tonights project the tunnel

I little practice to get all the angles and distances correct

Here goes nothing with one mistake costing $100 a sheet

The angles that are in the break I bent out of .100 to give it a less sharp bend

Not a bad evening!

I tried the trail tank on there and I really did not like how it fit with the skinz seat so I may end up rocking the Race jug on back again this year. The stock tank just fits so nice.

Sub frame is on the back burner, Not sure its compleately aborted but close. Weight was not looking good and I was getting frusterated so I moved on and it may or may not get picked back up in the future.

Finally getting some work done on my sled lately. My tunnel is starting to look more and more like a tunnel now, and with a little help from caleb and his sick tubing bender I got my bumper and start of my running boards bent up out of 4130 today. The way it is looking things will keep moving along for the next couple weeks.

Mock up for my running board bars, 3/4 .035 4130 with #10 aluminum riv nuts with aluminum studs and backer nuts. Should be light and provide lots of traction. There will be a bar every 3-4 inches on the running board.
