Installation of a MCX 290 kit on a 2011 Apex! Photos and before & after dyno runs coming soon! Sled had a PCV and Ulmer Racing MOD air box installed previously and dynoed at 87 track hp (approximately 161.1 hp at the crank). ;)!

The tear down started....

Did you dyno the sled without your mods? Yamaha is marketing this sled at 162.9 hp I believe. I guess Yamaha's number is a bit optimistic??

The 2011 & 2012 Apex models are both quite lean on top end which results in lower HP than what Yamaha claims. They dyno quite often in that 152-154 hp range. With just the PCV addition you will gain 5 hp and then with the air box modification you pick up another 3 hp.

Also remember that the pre 2011 Apex's dynoed in the mid to upper 140's in most cases.

Cutting of the tunnel....the aluminum cut nice and easy, on the chaincase side there is a bracket underneath that must be cut also, this took a little longer. I used a jigsaw, cut off wheel, and then a small cleaning wheel to clean the cut when finished.

Then you must drill two 8.5mm holes (11/32") that allow you to mount the turbo bracket to the tunnel. These are 30.6" back from the foot rest bracket and 1.5" down from the top of the tunnel.

The head was removed and now installing a set of ARP head studs as well...

All the stock studs removed....

I purchased these ARP head studs from Greg @ Power By GNS (Twin Turbo on TY here)......he recommends taping the stock holes to gain 1 or 2 more threads engagement....I used a 10mm x 1.25 Snap-On tap and then used Alumacut for cutting lube. On each one the last thread or two you could feel some material being removed....

2011ApexMCX038.jpg

ARP stud on top and stock stud on bottom....you can see the ARP stud is the same size the full length where the stock studs necks down to a smaller size in the middle....

2011ApexMCX036.jpg

Studs installed and ready for new MCX gasket to be installed and head reinstalled....stock head gasket measures .017" and the MCX gasket measures .087" thickness....
