My impression is Yamaha engineered the Apex to a new level of refinement to meet the needs of the majority of it's customers: the long distance groomed trail riders. While it doesn't have the most stock HP, it can keep up on the trail with any stock sled. It certainly is not be the lightest or best ditchbanger, but you don't drive Beemers or Lexus off road! Sticker shock is the phrase to best describe the pricing, but as opposed to other >$12000 sleds, Yamaha 4 strokes have durability and longevity which is unsurpassed which is reflected in the resale value.
I'm still waiting for the release of the other manufacturer's 2011 models before deciding on a new sled, but unless there is a major shift in paradigm, I'll probably save my pennies for the new Apex.
