I'm going to be gearing my LTX -SE up from the stock 21/41. Just looking to confirm a few things so I can source out what I need. Really annoying that there are no online parts diagrams to look at to confirm easily. Please correct me if I am wrong
Stock 21/41 uses a 15W top gear and 13W bottom
Stock Chain is 15W 86P HYVO
Cat gears from previous years will work? Any idea if viper gears will work?
Looking to change bottom gear and chain.

Cat gears work but be careful of the sinter metal cat gears. Safer to stick to Yamaha Borg ones or go Scott taylor hyvo's.

I know...would love to run taylor's again..but not in budget right now. Is there a listing of the Yamaha Borg gears and chain anywhere? I can't find one. So far I have found a cat BW 22 tooth top sprocket...but would like to go a little taller than that yet.

Ya,same problem I am having, well many huge problems but that's another story. Ulmer is working on having a 37 bottom made, not sure if our chain will still work with 21/37I know...would love to run taylor's again..but not in budget right now. What gearing are you guys aiming for in theoretical top speed?
I assume with gears the torsional coil bind will become a non issue then, if you dont max out the gearing.

Hi dan,yes allen suggests 37/21 which is close to 138 so unless you have real good conditions I don't think I will ever run out of gear, plus he is working on an older cat torsion red/white secondary spring that wont bind and adds a lot more side pressure where he feels it slipping, and he also has some super hard rollers made up from supremetools who may help some more, lets hope so lol. What gearing are you guys aiming for in theoretical top speed?

Nice, Ive been watching Allens posts and would love to use his setup...so stock is 21t/41b correct? He changes bottom to 37 to get 138 in full OD theory. I was so impressed with the stock quiet muffler and strong top end legs these SW's have, that Id love to mess with clutching and gearing alone initially....it would be very cool to see some ice radar speeds with motor untouched. Might need a hacksaw and short studs to make the bigger speeds on ice but surely a far cry from the stock pooch cat 1100 we had before wicking.
Man o man I never should have rode Toms, I got the damn speed bug back bad now...grrrr

You bet brother, man I know if anyone can make a nice ice buggie out of one of these stockers,it would be you Dan,and with all the critical pics and nice write ups to top it off...lol ya the only ride so far I have got to ride was my sons SE 137,no studs and I took it from mile zero to 79 on mostly fresh groomed and some hard packed but not wooped out bad,oh ya I did take her down one really rough deep holed Pole line trail, and was amazed how easy it went over that junk, some 2 feet deep,i did not pound on it,as the SE does not have the nicely matched up qs3,s my LE had, ouch, well will again(steve shock doc ) working his magic on them. But this all stock machine was just fun to rail around the twisty tight trails, and only thing we did was pull up straps one hole from stock, cause stock tunner carbides are min at best. No I did not rip it to bad,we only had so much headlight space, and sense my crash,to tell the truth, well it did make this ride somewhat unsettling to say the least,ya it got to 80 very quickly, but in the pitch black #*$&@ jumps out fast lol. Sled is so addicting, just plain stock,we did race mine 3 different times on grass, and finally the last race I tried it,wow it made 600 feet in very short time at 93 mph speedo and 93 GPS fantastic,i thought,i remember my 13 cat turbo stock felt likea turd compared to my set up ape GT with 1" energy track with 144 doubles down the middle, but once TD tune went in,it did change it dramadicly.Nice, Ive been watching Allens posts and would love to use his setup...so stock is 21t/41b correct? I seen a chart at one time showing the different length chains for different gear combos but can't seem to locate it. I'm going to a 37 bottom gear and need to know what length chain I'll need.
Thanks.
Thanks.

That was the chart I used, but got the wrong chain pitch for my 38 bottom and 21 top (stock) gear,i cant remember if the chain is 15 wide or not,and cant remember if bottom gear is 13 or 15 wide to.

i have a 24 41 with a 88 link custom made chain because its not offered from Borg W so u have to shorten a longer one or just buy it from scotty T - on a 141 which has a 8 tooth 3.0 driver, which is the smallest one at 24" circumference compared to the 137 2.86 9 tooth driver at a 25.74 circumference. so my ratio is about 1.71 but if u do the math based on the fact that my driver is the smallest ---- its confusing but with that all said - my top speed is about 132 compared to about 6 mph more with the 137 driver math ---- not enough for the 141 - im going taller....

So are you saying the part number isn't correct for the 84P 15W chain? 15 wide 84P 2602-838
