I purchased a new 07 Grizzly 660 about 3 weeks ago and I'm having a blast with it. I'm looking into replacing the stock wheels and tires with a wheels that will give me a wider stance and a more aggressive tire. My riding will be general woods and trails, with some mud occasionally. Wheels so far, I like ITP type 5 and for tires it will be either Mudlites, Dirtdevils, or Swamplites.

I have read where the weight with 27" and up tires can really start sucking up the power. But I would like something taller than the stock 25" tires on the Grizz right now. Would 26" be a good compromise? That way I could gain a little more ground clearance without as much power robbing weight. What do you think?

New Tires for grizz 660

I am looking at the exact same setup for my 07 660, type 5 wheels and either 26'' mudlites or swamplites for the same reasons you stated. My yamaha dealer says it is the ideal setup for that kind of riding and a bit more ground clearance with minimal power loss. They are also really pushing the mudlite xtr radial but they are quite a bit more expensive. I really like the looks of the swamplites.

I was able to look at some Mudlites, Mudlite XTR, Swamplite, and Perrelli (Spell?) at a dealer today. They are heavier than the stock tires noticeably. I guess you can't have 6 ply's and that much deeper tred (More rubber) without gaining some weight. I liked the XTR's and Swamplites the most out of the rest. But I don't like the idea of having to sell a kidney to afford the XTR's.

Mr. Sled, do you have a preference? I know tires and wheels turn into kind of Ford vs Chevy debate, but what is your tire and wheel philosophy for general riding? By the way this is a great site.

Fat R, have you settled on a preference yet?

grizz tires

Not yet, but im going to do some more research on the different tire and wheel combos and weight comparisons, maybe 25'' in a light mud tire is the way to go. It will still be heavier than stock but with 6 ply toughness and better m/s traction and they also look so much better. I would like to hear from someone who has tried the swamplites they (look) like they would be good in m/s and on trails and are reasonably priced. Interco has an excellent rep in off road truck tires.

Tires....... I've had my Grizz for a year now and I still can't figure out what tires to buy..... Haven't had the $$ to buy them but I've spent a lot of time researching them.

Good luck ;)!

I had 26 and 27 " tires I like the 26"ers better , The make I have is Swamp Fox , on the trail they seem fine , In the mud they are awesome. They clean out instantly and the traction is unbelieveable.

I am running 27" ITP 589's on ITP type 4 wheels, I love the combo and especially the tires although they are the only aftermarket tire I have tried. They are a great general all around tire IMO, they wear like Iron so I can't see me buying a new set for a few years anyways, they handle the mud and snow like it isn't there and they are not rough at all above 5km's an hour. I set my toe-in/out at "0" and they handle great IMO. The rims also give me a wider stance to take away the tippiness so I am totally happy with my combo. I chose my rims because you don't see them much anymore and I still think they look awesome. I did oose some power but I think I got most if not all of it back with the power tip and Twin-Air filter/flange set-up. My 2 cents............Irv

Thanks for the input , keep it coming. Does anyone know what 26" Swamplites weigh? I have not been able to find tech data on them.

How many miles do you have on the Swamp Foxes? How do they wear?
I have about 300mi. on them not much I know ,but I have buddies who have had them on for 800 mi. and they still look new, I know that still is not alot of mi. Awesome tire though.

I have 26" Mudbugs on one and 26" Dirt Devils on the other. The Dirt Devils are by far the better all around tire between the two. While the setup certainly eats up the power, I feel the ride and handling of the DD's is better than stock.

When the DNR saved us from ourselves by removing my favorite mud bog I went back to stock tires on the Mudbug machine but kept the DD's on the other. Wear has been quite good at around 1,500 miles with quite a bit of hardpack and pavement riding. The Bugs were getting pretty beat up by the pavement.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for all the information everyone! It looks like I found a deal today. I was at a Yamaha dealer today and ran into a guy that has a full set of 26" ITP Mudlite XL's on ITP type 4 wheels for sale used. They are only 4 weeks old and he wants $400 for the whole package including lugs and caps. I looked at them and all look brand new. The tires still have the casting nubs on them. He has a deal working thru a distributor on some XTL's and needs to free up some cash for them. It looks like a deal I might jump on, but what do you guys think?

I think that's a hell of a deal. Remember the offset on those wheels are different than stock. They will stick out further from your fenders. You may need a set of overfenders if you don't like getting dirty.

Thanks Ganz. As you can see by my signature line, I didn't let any grass grow under my feet. I picked up the Mudlites today, put them on the Grizz, and took it for a test drive. They perform great and I'm happy with the deal. They are heavier than the stock tires and wheels, but not by too much, and they do give the Grizz a wider stance.

Yep, it looks like overfenders are in order. I already had them on the short want list anyway. My wallet keeps getting thinner, but the smile keeps getting wider, and the coolness factor of the Grizz keeps increasing. A wise man once told me,"There are no luggage racks on a hearse." So I guess you might as well have some fun with cool toys while it lasts.
