Any time items are mass produced there is a chance for a random issue but obviously the Yamah engines are almost bullet proof. But a couple post on this site and we now have a mass problem. Just keep oil in them and ride them.

I'll bet when more guys get 3-4 thousand miles on their Nytros we will see even more of this. My wife has about 3300 miles on hers maybe I should keep the tow strap near by.
The second time on an internet froum does not make it a defect...how may thousand Nytros have not had this problem...JDS, stop coming on here to stir the pot.
I do feel sorry for the OP, if that happened to me it would put an end to my season...I hope everything works out for ya.
Hey I had to tow my wifes Nytro over 60 miles last year on a 6 day backpack trip because of something that was reported on these forums. Back in 04 I had another trip cut short because of an engine failure on my Rev that was due to a problem reported on DooTalk. All I know is if it starts to show up frequently on these message boards you can be sure its not just an isolated case. Just look at the ball joints, front clip, wet foot, relays freezing, wires rubbing and handwarmer issues on our Nytro. These things were first reported here and became a major problem. This timing chain problem looks like it could get much worse once we start putting more miles on these things. This isn't just on this site, I can go on DooTalk and find issues being reported that turn out to be a major problem that results in a recall or bulliten. Wake up guys! When have you ever read a problem with any other Yamaha 4 stroke breaking a timing chain?? I've never read of any Apex, RX1 or Vector timimg chain failures on here and they have been around since 03. This sounds like a manufacturer defect in either design or material. You can call it a bash or anything else you want but I have an 08 Nytro that will surpass 5 thousand miles this season and the last thing I want is another trip cut short because of a manufacturer defect!

Not saying it may not be an issue but just to many variables to play into it. I know my dealer will take care of me if a issue becomes apparent. The other manufactures would be leaving you out to dry. What can you do but hope it doesn't happen to you. You can a bunch of money changing parts that may be perfectly fine just in case. Just my opinion.

You can add another engine to this total. There's a 08 rtx sitting at a dealer around Manitowoc, Wi with a hole in the block. Rod bearing failure. This sled had 1200 very hard miles in it, and looks like it was all beat to hell. Yamaha is standing behide it as they allready have the new motor in it, but it was under original 1 year warranty. The cause is still being investigated, but preliminary thoughts is these sleds don't do well running at angles or upside down. This sled was rolled, crashed into things,so it's hard to tell what really went on.

Pretty sure keeping oil in them is not the problem!

Sounds like a streetbike i used to have. If you wanted to ride wheelies you have to put an extra quart of oil in. Well I forgot and well needless to say she blew up after about an 1/8 mile so I can believe this theory...

You can't blame Yamaha if the sled was beat and rolled over. I know people who are hard on equipment and everything they own breaks down or looks like crap.
Only a small % of people who ride post on these forums, you know there are alot more out there than this, still a sweet motor when its runnin, if someone would drop one in a xp for me i would be set.shaddow44 said:jds1000 said:This sounds like it could be a defect in these engines.
