I am talking shoulder fit or slight interference
Yes the retaining compound will set once the shaft is at Ambient temp!
There wouldn't be enough resistance to worrie about axial preload! The amount of tunnel flex on these sled probably wouldn't allow axial preload on the bearing..lol ! You hear of guys using a ratchet strap to get the retaining clip in the groove all the time!!
If we were talking about let say .003 interference fit then it's a different story
.003” press fit would split the bearing race, heck even .0015” would require a 20 ton press.
These guys saying they have .003” clearance on a new shaft are use a $25 caliper made in China to measure it. Mine was .0025” clearance and it had worn some. You guys are overthinking this whole thing. BOP wedge it with some loctight and call it a day. If someone can show me a new shaft that is actually 003” undersized I would say take the shaft to yamaha and claim it’s defective.
They can hold the I.D. Of the Chinese $10 bearing to within .0002”, it’s not that hard to hold those tolerances nowadays.

I was using .003" as a example!!!.lol

Don’t even need a caliper. When buying a new shaft just get a new bearing at same time. Slide it on. If it wiggles when on fully the fit is too loose..003” press fit would split the bearing race, heck even .0015” would require a 20 ton press.

Just a quick report back. We got one sled check/done. My buddy got 3400 miles on his last year. Prior to last season we replaced his driveshaft & bearings, applied Loctite 620, dimpled the shaft in 4 spots and put the BOP wedge in at 25 lbs. All is fine. Next up will be mine in a few weeks.

For piece of mind I'm sending it to be NDT'd. (Friend of a friend does NDT testing).

I thought the whole reason for welding the shaft was to achieve a press fit??
Your caliper is showing .0035” clearance, that’s way loose IMO.

I asked for a tighter tolerance not a press fit. Maybe my made in China caliper as you call it isn't 100% accurate.
I'm happy with it, a little loctite and the wedge and hopefully it doesn't spin. I didn't use loctite last year on the first go around with the wedge. Lesson learned.

Why lock tight the wedge anyone have a problem with it loosening? it should be always tightening spinning in drive i used neversiezeI asked for a tighter tolerance not a press fit. Maybe my made in China caliper as you call it isn't 100% accurate.

I assume he used loctite on the bearing and shaft not the wedge. If you loctite the wedge how would you ever get it out if needed.

IMO, should be maybe about .001" clearance?I thought the whole reason for welding the shaft was to achieve a press fit??

Less even. Should be no Felt play if putting a new Bearing on and bearing should have to be put on perfectly straight or will bind. Then use the wedge.IMO, should be maybe about .001" clearance?
