Looking at worn Dupont hyfax on my 14 xtx with 3500 mi. When to change? I have about 3/16 or 5mm slider left about midway back after the Dupont inserts stops. Why aren't the inserts the whole way? Is this as far as it will wear?

You have to get the Duponts for the mountain sleds (ie. skids larger than 150") for the Dupont inserts to go the whole way back. That is what I did on my 18 XTX and when I cut them down to fit the 146" skid, I cut right after the last Dupont insert. They were 174" and the part number is SMA-DPSSR-MT-00
As for how far they wear down, I will have to let someone else chime in on that as this is my 1st year running the Duponts.

I gauge mine with a 10 mm wrench.

Do you measure the total height with the wrench, meaning even the part that goes over the rail lip that holds it on?I gauge mine with a 10 mm wrench.

Boy, I wish I knew this yesterday! I already ordered a 144 inch set of DuPonts. Why didn't they have the Dupont material the whole length on all sled lengths, dammit? You have to get the Duponts for the mountain sleds (ie. skids larger than 150") for the Dupont inserts to go the whole way back. Because with the amount of wheels in the rear, the front will wear well before the rear, even without inserts. At least that is what I have seen on my XTX with duponts. I have never installed MTX sliders, but worth looking into if they were not much more.
But as I remind myself, I just don't see that area wearing as much as the front of the skid. They do wear pretty damn evenly.

on mine that is exactly where they do wear out in the rear with DuPont's. I put on the oversized X wheels on my 2012 XTX and ran stock slides for 2 seasons still running them now but will most likely put on the new DuPont's I bought when I put the new wheels on and started this experiment before I sell the sled. 4000 miles so far on stock slides with the larger wheels.

The new 144in Dupont hyfax I received from Port Yamaha have twice as many Dupont inserts in them and they extended further back about a foot than the original ones that came on my xtx.

10 mil. Wrench trick sounds good. How much does that leave. I mean is that a “change now or soon” type gauge.

So when I finally decided to buy the slides they are discontinued from Yamaha. What to do?

Remember they wear to a certain point then seem to go a long ways after that. I have over 5k, almost 6k on my 09 OEM shorty hyfax. The last few thousand miles they just seem to stop wearing. I have stock wheels and no scratchers. Of course I try to always ride in the best of conditions, not a person to do early or late season questionable riding conditions, hyfax and carbides last many seasons that way.

I never had scratchers or duponts. When I used to keep my sleds longer, there were times I could go 3-4 seasons on sliders, or many thousands of miles.
