Bad screeching and grinding

Well today was a frustrating day again working on my '15 viper! Thought I cured the grinding noise by taking apart the brake side bearing and replacing it with a quality one, original was shot dry and almost rusted up. Thought I'd go the easiest route, jackshaft bearing on this side is good. Went for a ride ,2 blocks and grinding and screeching was still there! Can't really place the location but I betting it's in the chain case. So tomorrow surgery begins. Any ideas what fails in here? Sled only has 3,600 miles, not enough in my books and experience to wear out bearings and parts unless there made for Tonka toys. Yah I am frustrated to the point where this sled is going on the block.

The bushing in the upper gear is prone to wear out very early in some cases. It's a pretty cheap fix, if that's the problem...

Good luck.

I would say it’s the chaincase side jack shaft bearing that has failed. These are a very cheaply made wobble bearing. Even when they are new I don’t understand how they stay together. They definitely don’t last as long as they should.

Well todays' project was to disassemble all the junk to take apart the chain case. Wasn't bad except the screws that hold the cover to the back had extra Loctite on them and made it slow to remove them all! The dealer was in here 2 years ago because the oil all drained out and they replaced a bunch of stuff but what I don't know. Okay the verdict is in, that top bearing was totally destroyed! The cage that holds the balls was in pieces and half of it was at the bottom. Most of the balls were squared off lots of metal in here. So I need to know 'cause I cannot find it on you tube, how to get that bottom bearing off the axle and the top shaft seal would it not be easier to remove the back part of the chain case that's bolted to the tunnel? It makes sense to me then I can get the race removed from the top case and seal easier and also the bottom. I am going to post some pictures once I figure out how this is a total mess. Also what do you guys' recommend me replace those 2 bearings with Yamaha part or get a top end bearing of what name and numbers please? Is there an update on the jackshaft or the top bearing as I understand it's called a wobble bearing and why did they use it,instead of just a standard one.

This is part of the bearing.Does it look like the balls were running one sided? I’m trying to load 2 more pictures but it keeps telling me the file is to large! What the H.

Just an FYI: Dealer I talked to last week told me this...

While the manual calls for 1.5 (correction from 1.0) bottles of Yamaha chain case oil, they put 2 bottles (16 oz) in every sled on their lot and every one they service. They told me 1 bottle wasn't enough oil to adequately lube all the parts (top bearing) in the upper part of the chaincase. They said the additional oil has caused no issues and they haven't seen any more problems with parts in the case wearing out prematurely.

Spec is 12 oz. Yamahas bottles are only 8 oz.

I run mine with oil to the top of the sight glass in chain case.

In your case it might just be easier to remove the whole chaincase. When I replaced the bottom drive bearing in my chaincase I had the drive axle out and just used a small chisel on the outter race to knock the bearing out.
As far as the seals go I wouldn’t replace them unless you absolutely have to. From what I have read on this forum they are absolute pain in the a** to replace.
For bearing replacements I used the oem bearings but I will be replaceing the upper chaincase bearing prolly every other season depending on Milage. Do some searching on this forum some guys have used a different bearing there. As far as the wobble bearing goes I believe the sidewinder doesn’t use it anymore it is just a normal bearing but the jack shaft design has been revised. Not sure if anyone has done the conversion on a viper though.
