This is part of the bearing.Does it look like the balls were running one sided? I’m trying to load 2 more pictures but it keeps telling me the file is to large! What the H.

This is the top bearing a used to be wobbly bearing. Bottom bearing is shot to from all the metals. Would the chains need replacement too?

Another thing to is the brake side bearing is a bit loose on the shaft, measured the shaft and it’s a bit smaller than where the seal sits. Also the seal took some serious heat it’s all cracked up! Is this typical of these drive components? When I get my new bearings I’ll dimple the shaft and apply green loctite bearing retainer.
If no visible marks 0n gears and chain is still flexible at all links it should be ok. Check back case for cracks.

Well cannondale I’m trying to get that back case off and only have most of the sled apart! This is the only way I can see to get the seals and bearings out properly.

May I ask you guys something? From my experience with this bearing catastrophe I am thinking of the oil in the chain case, there’s threads here saying that there is not enough oil causing problems with the upper side. But if I may suggest something, the engine oil tank gets very hot and is attached to the chain case which itself gets hot! Now my case is stained dark from burnt oil. So obviously CHAIN oil is maybe not the best in these Vipers’, what I’m going to use is synthetic differential oil, 75/90, or 75/140 like I use in my truck. It flows guite easy at -40 which I tried the other week!
Its the bearing itself that has been known to fail which is why they got rid of it in 17. I have been lucky I guess. Have used all kinds of Chaincase oils and nothing seems to prevent top gear bushing wear but worth a shot. Personally If I was in your situation I would buy everything needed to switch over to 17 setup. But $ is a factor for sure.May I ask you guys something? Yes I already asked about the update when I ordered my parts, I’ll stay away from the conversion as I’m thinking of parting this sled out! Ratio of break downs to actual riding is way to high!
Sorry to hear that. They all are getting too complicated and all of us seem to have less time to tend to them.Yes I already asked about the update when I ordered my parts, I’ll stay away from the conversion as I’m thinking of parting this sled out! I use synthetic differential oil, 75/90 . I keep in to or just above the top of the sight window . On first viper 2016 before I sold it this year I put 18700km lever lost a bearing any where on skid. I run my chain 1.5 turns back from finger tight. But I did replace the tip gear for bushing wear ever 8000km.

I have used in the years in ordinary cases different quality oil but I believe the cases never got as hot as these Viper/Cat cases. So if you think about a rear differential on a truck and the job it’s oil does not many people are changing bearings out at 3,000 plus miles! It’s just something to balance out over a coffee conversation. Just read the threads on how many riders have had problems with this! Happy sledding!
