I too have used the secondary movement as an indication of chain free play for years. Once you know how much it moves when it’s set correctly I think it’s a good indication. What ever happened to just grabbing the secondary clutch and rocking fwd and back to see how much play you have in your chain?
Measure it one time when chaincase is apart and check without taking anything apart.

Yep , easy and only takes a second.I too have used the secondary movement as an indication of chain free play for years. Once you know how much it moves when it’s set correctly I think it’s a good indication.
I think this idea of Travis will eliminate some of the guessing and be much more definitive. We'll get more exact feedback as to what seems to be working across the board. Now if only we could have more access to the chain tensioner without removing the damn exhaust!

So we use the rod to measure the gap between the bolt and tensioner then do you remove the rod and plug the hole somehowMy machinist sent some pics of my samples today. I should have them in hand next week! I went with 1/16” increments on the depth guage rod.

Yes it comes with a small bolt and gasket that screws in to the new tensioner bolt.

guys I think the advantage to the design is an objective measurement rather than just ‘feel’.
I too d0 the secondary movement to assess loosening of chain.
With guys now running huge HP#s they could with this accurately determine the Rate of stretch and plan chain and other component replacement more accurately. My two cents.
I personally don’t need this with a stock Viper with this chain case but understand why some guys with Huge HP would.

Is the bolt a new OEM bolt that was modified for this purpose?

So I had a complete slip on this one guys. All my testing and fit ups were done on a chain case on the work bench. I had intended to install in my personals sleds, but working on my own sleds always gets put on back burner anymore. Turns out depth rod will not clear stator cover. Sold quite a few of them and wasn't until today that a customer actually brought this to my attention. I'm going to switch the depth rod to a different material so it is flexible and does not require a straight run into the bolt.
Feel like an idiot, but mistakes happen and I have no issue disclosing that. I have started conversation with my machine shop to get replacement rods made up. If you currently have one of these please reach out to me so I can ensure I get you the updated depth rod. I will send them out as soon as I have them.

How much freeplay should you have when rocking the secondary back & forth.

With my tensioner set at one and one half turns out I checked it.
I set parking brake and rotated clutch including the tensioner spring pressure and I came up with almost 3/4" rotation on secondary clutch at outer edge.
