Now that I see what can happen I wish I would have one that bolts to the factory belt guardWith the protector bolted to panel like that there is a good chance it will bust the panel. Seen it happen more than once now.

I suspected all along that the protector may still lead to cracked panels where the screws go thru the panel . Guess I was right. But hopefully for some it works. I have one installed anyway and and hope I never find out.

I spent all last summer looking at various options. Looked into tying into belt guard and decided against it. To tie in you are running plate almost vertical in front of primary which yields nearly a 100% guarantee for guard to buckle if belt flies front. If the vertical plate buckles, its likely going to pull the upper guard down which in turn could dislodge the air box from the intake tube running to the turbo. Saving a belly pan is not worth risking the turbo sucking in belt fragments flying around under the hood. Is it a long shot....probably, but I try to reason through all the ripple effects. If yamaha would just give us a belt that handles the power then all this goes away altogether. Ha.

This is after it was taped up, but one of the 4 Sidewinders in our group that blew a belt this weekend took out his panel.
This is the second lower panel for this guy. Bought the protector after replacing plastic the first time.
I think the second smaller piece is in the right spot, but maybe needs to be mounted somehow without being bolted to the plastic itself?

I feel it’s just going to happen again,I’m thinking of getting the one that TD uses. It bolts to the upper shield. This is the second lower panel for this guy. Bought the protector after replacing plastic the first time.

You have my vote for a full circle design with a bent or welded front lip for additional strength. I have the current BOP belly pan protector and at 110 MPH my belt snapped clean in one spot with no shredding or chunks whatsoever. It blew out the rear of the stock belt guard to the point where it'll be tough to get it bent back into shape to reattach and also broke the Side panel where it attaches to the lower panel behind the Brake.
the only negative about the full circle is then the clutches take the beating as the belt stays in..

I agree 100%. Trying to pull out belt fibers in a seized clutch trail side could be a bigger problem than blowing out the panel itself.
I have been contemplating the idea of using plastic bolts to secure the panels in the front. The plastic fasteners could potentially save the panel from cracking as they would more less function as shear pins.
Since my sidewinder will not blow a belt, maybe I will have to put some old cracked 8dn belts on so I can test out some plastic fasteners.

Travis, my concern would be that the belt that sheared clean, like many have, would take out the belt guard and pull it into the clutches. I would buy a full circle belt guard that is heavy enough to fill it full of holes for air flow. worse case.....It doesn't take much to pull the sheaves off to clear belt shrapnel.

Got real lucky when blowing the first belt at 1100 miles, had just let off the throttle and was slowing down when it broke with no damage.
I bought the BOP protector and the second belt blew at another 1100 mile interval. That time I was about half throttle when it exploded. Glad I had the protector, it got bent up pretty good but once home I took it out and straightened it out and re installed. Would have done more damage without and that I am sure of.

I have the BOP belly pan protector and it saved the belly, but the stock Guard got destroyed when that belt blew. Second belt with the belly pan protector took out the side panel.
The side panel with it's decals is about $200. I'd like to avoid buying them too often.
This isn't a knock on the belly pan protector. I'd just like to add more protection.

Yes I understand. I was just stating how lucky I have been. Next time I could be where you are at!
