I put on a brand new Boss High Rise Seat and the seat is super hot from the exhaust muffler. Boss is aware of the situation, but really gave no solution other than, we have heard from 5 or 6 customers about this and we tell them to put some heat tape between the muffler and the seat.
I absolutely love the seat, but what a horrible design glitch.
Has anybody encountered this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Did you look at the little nomex blanket they gave you to cover the muffler? It's no wonder the seat gets HOT! Of course it's kinda welcome at -10 deg. F.
I have some heat tape/shield to insert on mine.....just been too lazy to do it. You know, the foam stuff with the heat tape backing. Should be plenty.

Heat Blanket
buddah2 - I wish that were the case...of course I used the Heat Blanket they gave me...I am planning on buying some heat tape tomorrow at the local NAPA...they say it's good up to 2000 degrees, I am hoping this helps at least cut the temps in half...
Have you installed and ridden w/ your new seat? If so did your's heat up?

I wasn't asking if you used it......I was implying it was pretty flimsy considering it was "replacing" the hard plastic with heat tape of the stock seat.
Yeah, I've probably got over 1K mi. on mine with the seat installed. Best investment I ever made to a sled.....because I've got terrible knees and the firmer seat moved me up and straightened them out a little. Yes, it does get warm.....very warm after a while. I usually pull over every 40 to 50 mi. for a little break after it warms up.
The -10 comment was from right after I put it on last year. I had to ride it up to the shop for a scheduled repair and when I got up that morning it was -10. Since I would have had to wait more than a week if I no-showed, I took off. 37 or so mi. Boy was I happy with that seat after a few mi. THAT morning.
P.S. Where in OH you from? We still own our house in Dublin (Columbus).

Hot Seat
buddah2 - sorry , wasn't trying to be a d--k... Ya the fire blanket they give is very flimsey, but never thought it wouldn't work. Especially, since I paid $500.00. I guess you would think Boss would have figuerd this thing out. The stock seat was re-enforced with the hard plastic bottom w/ tape on it. Boss must have thought it would have been to pricey to add some kind of hard material to the bottom..oh well...I guess were never really gauranteed that after market parts will work or do what they say they will do. "BUYER BE WARE"
I absolutely, love the seat too. it turns that sled into a brand new RX totally different characteristics (for the better) Everyone, should put one of these on..they would feel the same way.
My buddy has the sled today and he is going to add as much heat tape as he can without changing the seating position. I am going riding tomorrow at Chautauqua Lake (western, NY) area and will report any changes.
I live in NE Ohio, right smack in the Snowbelt...Too bad, we don't have a real trail system here. I have 2 feet off snow at my house and it's coming down pretty good as i write this....my sons school was called off yesterday and they are calling for 8 - 16 more inches from today through tomorrow.
Ride safe!

Boss seat heat
I just installed a new boss seat on my Apex with stock exhaust. First ride was about 1 hour long and my lunch, snacks, lighter, matches and fire starter sticks were in a zip lock bag in the trunk. The baggy melted. I contacted Boss today and emailed pics. Has anyone come up with a solution? I was going to try the foil with air bubbles to see if that helps.

Well my stock seat melted from the heat. Lets just say it was very warm to ride. After some checking it seems that I no longer had an air gap between the muffler and the asbestos on the cover that goes over it. I put a special high heat blanket between the seat and shield, still way to much heat.
Made a spacer out of tubing to put between muffler and shield so I had an air gap that helped lots but still it would get warm. Finally replaced muffler with a smaller one and no more heat.
Seems what is needed is a air gap with air flow. The extra blanket did little!

my stock 05 seat does like to get warm on long runs. i switched out to a 03 seat (i have short legs) because i found the 05 seat too tall for me. it still heats up but nothing is melting and it has extra insulation/reflective tape compared to the 05 seat. i just have to ride a couple of km's standing up to cool down is all.

On my old Rx-1 I had a Boss as well. Did the same thing. I added about 4 layers of tin foil and that fixed it. It is a shame this problem still exists. Liked the improved ride of the seat, hated the quality, fit and finish. Would never go Boss again.

I was thinking about buying a high rise seat for my RX1 and emailed boss to ask a few questions, no one ever got back to me yet?? Also.. how hard are they to install? pics? Im torn between finding a Apex or attack seat or the boss.. whats best guys?

Boss is loosing rep as a company. I have Boss Nos and once i got it figured out by myself im happy with it. I have a Mountain Mod seat on my 03 and its awsome. Murray is excellent to deal with. Worth the extra $$

I second Mountain Mod as the seat to go with. No drilling extra holes in the tunnel for snaps needed. Just transfer stock mounting hardware (including heat shield) to the new seat and it fits like a glove. Well worth the extra cost.
Sucks that the same problem exists year after year with the Boss seats.

There si a guy on snowest that orders 40 to 50 seats a year from boss who can't get them to answer his calls or emails. Id say a 1 seat guy is never going to get through. I think the AC deal is top priority and everyone else is second fiddle. maxdlx
