Well you know i'm not really much of a complainer...more of a lets get er done right than...but this is the second time my buds have shown up here to go riding, and i'm sitting here looking at all my gear and my apex is all dead and flooded and 1/4 throttled when turning over, its all pump up the rail 4 times before you try it , its all so brand new battery it didn't need, now with a boost, its all those things I was told to try here when my 17 700 dollar sled wont start if it sees a little cold coming ...now don't think i'm bashing anything cause Im not ....i'm pissed ...I made the switch , put down my money, and I got a very pretty lawn ornament... k.., and don't tell me i'm starting my engine wrong ...I've tried every conceivable way when its cold , that sled wont start after a cold northern Manitoba night ...I'm gonna go have a coffee and calm down...., hope you all have a beautiful ride this morning ....This is my only day off to ride ..lovely ..coulda took the ol 800 but i'm not gonna listen to that sh*t all day from those clowns "just kidding guys" .... got about 4 more inches last few days....trails are mint here..... this sucks ...just sayin

That sucks. We have started all of 4S yamahas down to -40. When one is hard to start when very cold we hold the throttle to the bars and crank until she fires and clears up. Never had one NOT start yet.

I used starting fluid once when it was real cold and the sled had been sitting for a long time. Fired right up on it.
Only did it that one time..not sure if is very good for the motor. I used to do it to big 2 strokes all the time when having to use a pull rope.

If I was riding in -31c weather sled might start but I wouldn't.LOL. We rode in -29f once all 3 sleds 4 stroke. They started but not like normal. Put a small coolant heater on it. Maxdlx

Bring a small propane cylinder with torch head..
Open air box lid on cold day and stick the beak of the torch in(not lighted of course - with gas on)
Starts right up!

I dont understand.
if your friends were there and you knew this cold start is an issue you only had this opportunity to ride and you have access to a heated blanket.
Why didnt you just put the blanket on it the night before and plug it in 2 hrs before you wanted to leave?
Sure it sux, but its way better to get some grief from your friends while riding your sled than missing the trip.
If it was my sled, after the 2nd try not starting, i would have heated 5 gallons of water and dumped it on my motor to warm it up.
To me, its a way better option than to miss a good time.
I had to piss on my frozen apex starter one time.
It was embarrasing and didnt smell nice but it got me on the trail and thats all a really care about when 5 guys are standing around waiting on me
I get that you are not happy with your starting issues, i would suggest a trip to the dealer. Leave it outside over night and show them the issue. If they dont help, start calling the yamaha phone # in the back of your owners manual.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

If you are die hard enough to ride in -30 temps then install a inline heater! It spices directly into your coolant hose, Yamaha sells them at, don't quote me but I think around fifty bucks. Don't forget, a lot of vehicles don't start at those temps if they are not plugged in!

We had 3 apexs not start one very cold morning on a trip in New Brunwick. I boiled water and poured over the coolant line close to the thermostat while someone cranked the engine. All 3 fired right up.

You better hope the sled doesn't backfire thru the throttle bodies because you will be eating the air box lid.Grunter said:Bring a small propane cylinder with torch head..

Like someone said already ,put one of those yamaha inline coolant heaters in and plug sled in half hour before you go for a ride and it will start like its summer out . I have one on my turbo sled and it works like a charm , even with race fuel in the tank

I fogged my sled last fall and had cold start issues at the beginning of this season. I think I partially fouled a plug. I know on my 4stroke dirt bike if I flood it once the plug is not right after that. Sure it will run and start but I can feel hesitation. It easier to feel with one cylinder dirt bike. Anyway with this in mind I put new plugs in it and fires right up in the -25c weather. The sled ran fine with old plugs but when I pulled them out one was wet and the others were not. Just a thought
