Stupid question!!! What about putting in a longer adjustment bolt? It's only a 3/8 x 16 tpi bolt. Spending 375.00 cdn every 2-3000 kms for a new chain is pretty ridiculous. Or is the excess dog leg in the chain problematic.? Not trying to be cheap. Is the chain just stretched or is it worn and needs to be replaced. If so is it smart to just change the chain and not do the gears?
Best source for chain in Canada?
Thanks guys for all your help.

You can trim the spacer down if needed. Never liked the 21/41 combo due to the dog leg .

Doing the chain often is still cheaper than having the chain pile up and take out the case, and thats if it doesn't lock the track up 80+MPH.Stupid question!!! Gotta pay to play.
Been there done that. Very expensive and if bad enough metal/link will be in your oil tank! Its easy to catch. Adjustment is very consistent once broke in. If having to go more something is failing either chain or bearings etc. I know I will get heat for this but if the gears are in good shape especially if aftermarket like my 25t top $ just get the chain reuse the gear. I also recommend changing reverse chain at same time as stretched Main. Sucks having to take it all apart a 1000mi later because reverse chain is skipping and I never saw a spec for checking it. Had to do that also!Doing the chain often is still cheaper than having the chain pile up and take out the case, and thats if it doesn't lock the track up 80+MPH.

I’ve never personally broke a chain on 998 but seen some broke and also seen when making one longer or shorter the pins are very worn and chain is junk .
How many miles on these sleds with worn chains?

I'm at almost 20,000 km on my 2017. Original top gear as well!!! No play on shaft. Just out of thread on the adjuster.Good to know thanks!
And yes I spot welded the 2 screws on the roller adjuster.

In this pic, to me it looks like chain has quite a bit of sag (ie it's too loose). To me, right tension is about 1-1/4 turn out from in as far as tight as your fingers can turn it.I have 21/41 i didn’t think the dog leg looked too extreme?View attachment 179388
I agree; this dog leg isn't that bad.

Actually that’s one turn out from fully hand tight per pefi instructions for their tensioner lolIn this pic, to me it looks like chain has quite a bit of sag (ie it's too loose). To me, right tension is about 1-1/4 turn out from in as far as tight as your fingers can turn it.

I'm convinced the roller tensioner is hard on the chain. In my 2025, I changed the chaincase fluid at 300 miles, and put in the Precision EFI skate tensioner. First time trying it. Rode the sled for another 2500 miles, and there was no slack in the chain, it did not stretch at all, and was at the tension I set it. That would have never been the case IMO with the roller tensioner. This is based on getting into at least 10 new sidewinders chaincases which were new.
